About the Item

This vibrant 1955 lithographic poster by Eugène Zéliep was created to promote the Musée de la Figurine Historique (Museum of Historical Figurines) in Compiègne, a town steeped in French military and imperial history. Bursting with patriotic color and Napoleonic flair, the composition reflects the museum’s dedication to preserving and showcasing miniature military figurines and uniforms from France’s storied past. At the center of the design is a highly stylized Napoleonic cavalryman, rendered with flair and movement as he gallops forward on a white stallion, trumpet raised, and a vibrant regimental banner unfurled. Below him appears the stately façade of Château de Compiègne, tying the museum directly to its prestigious historical setting—a former royal and imperial residence that hosted monarchs from Louis XV to Napoleon III. The typography is bold, modernist, and patriotic, using the red, white, and blue of the French tricolore to reinforce the national heritage focus of the museum. The playful use of size and layout, especially in “Figurine Historique,” balances modern 1950s design with historical reverence. The Musée de la Figurine Historique was—and remains—a unique cultural destination, known for housing thousands of miniature soldiers and dioramas representing historic battles, military uniforms, and regiments from across the centuries. It appeals both to military historians and children alike, capturing the imagination through craftsmanship and miniature storytelling. Zéliep’s poster is a perfect encapsulation of mid-century French public design—straddling modern graphic principles with nostalgic subject matter. Eugène Zéliep was known for his crisp, illustrative style, often merging cartoon-like energy with finely controlled line work and color blocking. As a collectible, this poster stands out not only for its lively visual impact but also for its celebration of a niche yet deeply cherished aspect of French heritage: the miniature figurine as both object of art and vessel of memory. This striking 1982 vintage poster, designed by Razzia, was created to promote the Paris Posters exhibition at the Musée de l’Affiche et de la Publicité during the summer (Été 82). Featuring a bold and graphic collage-style composition, the artwork embodies the dynamic energy of 1980s design. Razzia, a renowned French graphic artist, is celebrated for his iconic Art Deco-inspired poster designs with a modern twist. In this piece, he juxtaposes a stylized black-and-white Eiffel Tower, a monochrome portrait of a woman, and an accordion transformed into the Arc de Triomphe, all set against a dramatic black background with vivid color accents. The use of cutout-style imagery and neon-inspired typography reflects the postmodern aesthetic of the early 1980s, capturing the bold creativity of the era. The vibrant contrast of yellow, red, and blue highlights adds to the poster’s visual impact, making it a standout example of contemporary French graphic design. Loterie Nationale Original Vintage French Poster by Derouet Lesacq c1939
Located in Boca Raton, FL
This is one of a series of posters created for the Loterie Nationale (National Lottery) in France by a team of artists known as Derouet-Lesacq. In these posters, the element of simplicity is emphasized, allowing the artists to apply detail to the array of environments that these posters are set in. This Art Deco style poster is for a special Homemaking (Arts Menagers) lottery drawing. The man in the center of the image is shown lounging on a chair, presenting an unplugged chord, demonstrating comfort after his lottery win. The French Government promoted a nationwide lottery for many years, and during the 1930’s they commissioned artist Edgar Derouet to create many of their posters. Derouet realized his posters either alone or with one of his many collaborators. This poster is the result of a collaboration with Charles Lesacq, who worked with Derouet from 1938 to 1940. Edgar Derouet (1910-2001) is known for his simplistic, geometric and modern advertising posters for the French Lottery (Loterie Nationale). Derouet was selected by France to create a campaign for the Loterie Nationale because of his well-known reputation as a graphic artist. In his earlier days, Derouet studied with well-known poster artists Paul Colin and George Hamel, allowing him to further perfect his illustration technique. Derouet won an award for Best Poster of the Year in 1936 and was featured at the International Exposition in Paris, France in 1937. Charles Lesacq (1909-1940) was a French artist best known for his French National Lottery poster...
