About the Item

This etching, the prototype of which is attributed to Adriaen Collaert (ca. 1560-1618), is taken from the Theatrum Biblicum by Claes Jansz. Visscher, first published in Amsterdam in 1639. To create his work, Visscher selected and reused Flemish master copperplates, also making some significant changes. Rather than an illustrated Bible, the Theatrum Biblicum is a compilation of prints that presents Scripture in pictorial form. Replacing the textual narrative with a visual one, the work includes over 450 Old and New Testament prints, most of which are accompanied by a brief Latin distich. Subsequent editions of Visscher's Theatrum Biblicum appeared in 1643, 1650 and posthumously in 1674. Signed lower left. The state of preservation is good. The etching has good margins and partially glued onto another paper support. Some stains. Claes Jansz. Visscher (c. 1586-1652) was one of the most important and prolific printmakers and print publishers in seventeenth-century Amsterdam. Almost 5,000 prints were issued from his flourishing family business under the sign of De Visser (The Fisher).
