19th c .

Jacob et L'ange or Jacob and the Angel depicts the angel standing next to Jacob with a radiating halo behind her head and one hand on his outstretched arm. Jacob is naked except for a cloth around his middle. The myth is that Jacob wrestled with God this case represented by the angel... thru the night until daybreak and in the end prevailed and was given the name Israel and blessed. Jacob and the Angel is after Gustave Moreau and etched by Charles Albert Whitner ( 1846 - 1925 ) a French aquafortist engraver. In 1868 he won the Prix de Rome in intaglio engraving and in 1908 was received at the Academy of Fine Arts. His works can be found in museums all over the world. This print was published by George Petit , Paris. The paper size is 28.50 x 17 image size 25.50 x 14.50. It is in very good condition except for a water stain line just below the moon and in the margin. A very dark good impression.
