ABOUT THIS WORK
Created for the WPA (Works Progress Administration), impressions of this work are held in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Albert Potter's evocative, expressionist image, created at the height of the Great Depression, portrays New York City's diverse denizens packed into a subway car, oblivious to the skeletal-like figure madly playing the violin; the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan skyline appear in the background through the car window. The scene alludes to the legend of the emperor Nero playing his violin while fire destroyed the city of Rome.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Albert Potter (1903-1937) was born in Russia and emigrated to the United States to settle in New York City. He studied art at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Art Students League and was employed by the New York Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression. His highly creative artistic career was cut short due to death by drowning at the early age of 34.
Potter's graphic works are represented in the collections of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Baltimore Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, The U.S. Library of Congress, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and Yale University Library.
