Banksy
DI-FACED TENNER (10 GBP NOTE)

2004

About the Item

Unsigned offset lithograph in colors on paper. £10 note Di-Faced by Banksy with a portrait of Princess Diana on the front and the motto: "I Promise to Pay the Bearer on Demand the Ultimate Price." The back features Darwin's image and the statement: "Trust No One." From the private collection of Steve Lazarides, Banksy’s original art agent. Steve represented Banksy in his early years and brought his art into the public spotlight. The Di-faced Tenner was created for a public stunt Banksy had orchestrated that involved dropping a suitcase full of the fake currency in public, during rush hour at the Liverpool tube station in London and at the Notting Hill Carnival and Reading Festival. Later that year, an unknown amount of Tenners were also released at the exhibition preview of Santa’s Ghetto, held at Lazarides Gallery. In addition to its fascinating history as an unperformed public stunt, the Di-faced Tenner had the honor of being Banksy’s first piece of art to enter in the British Museum private collection earlier this year. Custom framed as pictured. Frame size approx 9 x 12 inches. Includes letter of provenance from Steve Lazarides including matching tamper resistant hologram on the frame verso and letter and Gallery Art certificate of authenticity. Please note hologram sticker serial numbers have been concealed in the pics in red.

  • Portrait with Jack Kerouac (Invitation to Basquiat's final exhibition)
    By Jean-Michel Basquiat
    Located in New York, NY
Jean-Michel Basquiat Portrait with Jack Kerouac (Invitation to Basquiat's final exhibition), 1988 Offset Lithograph for Basquiat's final exhibition Measurements: Offset print, 6″ x 9″ (folded); 10 1/2″ x 9″ (splayed open) Beyond scarce! Exhibition invitation for Basquiat's show at Vrej Baghoomian Gallery, NY, April - June 1988, photograph by (French photographer) Jerome Schlomoff. Historic, uncommon offset lithograph fold-out invitation from what would become the very last exhibition of Basquiat's short life. Indeed, what makes this exhibition invitation so extraordinary is that this exhibition ended June 11th, 1988 - almost exactly two months before Basquiat's own life ended, at the age of 27, on August 12, 1988. Some would later say that Basquiat's death seemed almost foreshadowed by the announcement’s austere design, colorless palette, and solemn portrait photograph. In the photo, he clutches the copy of Jack Kerouac’s The Subterraneans which Basquiat, an autodidact, is said to have kept in his suitcase wherever he went, (The semi-autobiographical novel is about Kerouac's affair with an African-American woman, and his entree into the world of Jazz.) Basquiat famously had a falling out with the notoriously sketchy Vrej Baghoomian, and he is said to have boycotted the opening reception on April 29th. This invitation was printed in Basquiat's lifetime - making it such a collectible. Phoebe Hoban reported in her biography, "Basquiat: A Quick Killing in Art": .."the FBI in 1994 investigated a matter in which Vrej Baghoomian, the dealer who represented the painter at the time of his death, had sold five fake Basquiats at a Paris art fair. Though he apparently hadn’t made the fakes himself, and was never convicted, “Vrej was a big crook,” says the artist Rick Prol...

Copper etching with aquatint The power of memory and how it recalls individuality begins in such basic experiences as the ability to link internal ideas to external manifestations of those ideas. Memories as simple as an old toy or a street can set off a chain reaction of thoughts that snowball into issues as broad as nationalism, identity politics or a body politic to name a few. Hector Ruiz’s works encompass the broad, complex and often painful world particular to the Arizona and neighboring Mexican landscape. United States and Mexican border...
