About the Item

Head of a man in a high cap is an engraving on ivory-colored paper realized by Charles Amand Durand (1831-1905) after an etching by Rembrandt. This wonderful piece of art belongs to a late edition of the 19th century. Good conditions. Rembrandt known simply as Rembrandt (Leiden, 15 July 1606 - Amsterdam, 4 October 1669), was a Dutch painter and engraver. He is generally considered to be one of the greatest painters in European art history. Having achieved great success as a portrait painter from a young age. His drawings and paintings were already popular during his lifetime. Rembrandt's greatest creative triumphs are especially evident in the portraits of his contemporaries, his self-portraits, and illustrations of scenes from the Bible. In both painting and printing, he exhibited a thorough knowledge of classical iconography. Charles Amand Durand (1831-1905) Eager to save the masterpieces of the Great Masters of Graphics of the Modern Age, whose plates already at the time of Durand were for the most part irreparably compromised, Durand dedicated a major part of his life to recreating in exact detail the engraved plates of Rembrandt & other old Masters. His work was recognized as innovative and of high quality not only by scholars and dealers, but also by important European art institutions.

Sketch of a Man in Profile
Located in London, GB
Sketch of a Man in Profile 17th Century French School Ink on paper Image Size: 10 1/2 x 7 inches (26.5 x 17.5 cm) Framed Provenance The estate of Joseph McCrindle Christies Old Masters and British Pictures and Old Master Drawings Sale 12th December 2008 This highly worked picture shows us a man depicted in profile is seen interacting with a scene that extends beyond the boundaries of the paper's composition, the pen strokes intricately portraying the man's face, rendering a detailed, textured complexion. He points his left hand out to something in the distance, with a look of almost alarm. The artist Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (1609-64) did a series of oriental head studies. The exotic headgear that he wears and this type of oriental head studies, had its principal source was of course Rembrandt, who etched many similar heads during the 1630s. In the seventeenth-century Western European imagination, the turbaned figure represented the epitome of alterity: the Ottoman Turk. Ottoman costume...
