About the Item
Etching on cream wove paper, 4 1/2 x 7 inches (114 x 177 mm), wide margins, signed in pencil in the lower right. Laid down to non-archival board with the mat affixed, obscuring the verso and the sheet edges. The visible portion of the sheet is clean with minor toning around the mat window opening. The signature is unobscured and clear.
Best known as the original illustrator of Enid Blyton's books, Eileen Soper was particularly fond of depicting children and animals. She was born in 1905, in Enfield, Middlesex, UK, and then moved at a very young age to Hertfordshire, where her father, artist George Soper, built a home the family called "Wildings." Wildings was complete with a wildlife sanctuary and sprawling gardens filled with life. Eileen sketched many of the animals living there, including deer, birds, and comical badgers. Showing exceptional talent, at thirteen she produced her first etching, and it was just three years later in 1918 that she was exhibited at the Royal Academy. Soper's charming compositions attracted immediate attention and from the age of just sixteen her future success in the world of illustration was cemented.
Childhood was to be Eileen Alice Soper’s lifelong theme. She captured the touching purity and joy of children at play in a way that has endured in a timeless manor. Soper produced more than 160 original etchings in the first ten years of her career, and at about the age of 26 she turned her full attention towards illustrating the well known children's books of Enid Blyton, including Noddy, the Famous Five series, and the Secret Seven series.
Soper also wrote and illustrated her own children's book, and later in life she concentrated on writing and illustrating wildlife books. She was a founding member of the Society of Wildlife Artists (SWLA) and was elected a member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers (RMS) in 1972. Eileen Soper passed away in 1990 at Wildings, the childhood home in which she lived all 85 years of her life.

Eileen Soper
Eileen Soper, born in 1905 was the second daughter of an accomplished artist, George Soper, who was an engraver, etcher and illustrator. Taught by her father, George Soper, she showed early promise as an artist. Two of her etchings were exhibited at the Royal Academy in London when she was 15. She showed three prints at an exhibition organized by the International Society of Printmakers in California. Soper continued to produce around 180 etchings mostly of children at play into the early 1930s. Her work was popular and well-received and shown in the UK and the USA. Today, Soper is best known for her collaboration with Enid Blyton, most notably all of the Famous Five books. She produced a series of etchings mainly of children playing and illustrated books for other writers, notably for Enid Blyton and Elizabeth Gould, and wrote and illustrated her own children's book. Some of her illustrations of children and animals were used in a china series for children by Paragon China in the 1930s. Later in life, she concentrated on writing and illustrating wildlife books. This artwork titled "A Burro Train, New Mexico" 1880 is an original etching on Laid paper by noted British/American artist Peter Moran, 1841-1914. It is signed in the plate as issue. The plate mark (Image) size is 9.15 x 6.5 inches, framed size is 14.75 x 18.75 inches. It is framed in a wooden silver frame, with light grey matting. It is in excellent condition, especially considering the age. I like to mention that example of this particular etching is held in the following museums, including, The Toledo Museum Of Art, Toledo, The British Museum, London and The Smithsonian Museum Of Art, Washington D.C. It was also illustrated in American Art Review, volume #2 1881, page 163.
About the artist:
The younger brother of Thomas Moran, Peter Moran was a painter-etcher best known for his Romantic sensibility and landscape compositions incorporating animals. The Moran family immigrated to the United States from England in 1844, when Peter was three. He began his artistic career as an apprentice to a lithographic firm and eventually studied painting with his brothers Edward and Thomas. He was influenced by the animal paintings of Rosa Bonheur and Constant Troyon and visited England in 1863 to see those of Edwin Landseer.
Moran took up etching in 1874, using that medium to record genre scenes that he observed while traveling in New Mexico and Arizona in 1881 on an ethnographic expedition to study Pueblo Indian culture. He later returned to the Southwest in 1890 as an artist for the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
In 1882, Moran joined Henry R. Poore, an artist friend, on a visit to Taos Pueblo where the two were given a room and spent a week watching the activities associated with the harvest. Poore recounted the details of their travels in an article titled "A Harvest with the Taos Indians...
