About the Item

Exhibited for the first time in 1928 at Galerie Bernhiem-Jeune, Paris, this work was published by Bernheim-Jeune and printed under the direction of Villon. Assuming a pose resembling a Grecian goddess, the subject appears devoid of individual characteristics. Leger has removed all flaws, creating a pristine image defined by silken black hair and a curvaceous torso. Adding further visual intrigue to the image, Leger bifurcates the perspective of the image allowing the vase to dominate both the foreground and background of the image. "His need to use the face as just one among many elements made it impossible for him to treat it any other way than as a decorative object, regardless of how much this displeased people. Leger did not want to be dominated by the subject. A break with sentimental painting was the only way for him to create a beautiful object on the canvas. He had his "professional conscience" to reckon with, just as the early masters did" (Neret, 181). Created in 1928, this color aquatint, engraving and roulette on Arches paper is hand-signed by Fernand Léger (Argentan, 1881 – Gif-sur-Yvette, 1955) in pencil in the lower right margin. Numbered from the edition of 200 in pencil in the lower right margin and was published by Galerie Bernheim-Jeune, Paris. Born in Lustdorf, near Odessa, Russia, to a British father and Russian mother. Traveled extensively with his family before studying architecture in St Petersburg, with further studies at Ecole des Beaux-Arts and Atelier Redan, Paris. Practiced architecture in Moscow and was co-designer of the Metropole Hotel, in 1898. Moved to London in 1907 and was employed as an architectural perspectivist. After a sponsored visit to Rome and Venice he had a solo exhibit at the Fine Art Society, 1912, 'Watercolours of London and Venice'; followed by a further four shows. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Society of Painter-Etchers..., and Connell & Sons. His etchings were published in London by H C Dickens,1913-24, and a folio of his work 'Architectural watercolors and etchings of William Walcot' was published, in 1919. Elected RE, 1920; FRIBA, 1922; Associate British School at Rome. A foremost architectural draughtsman, he worked from studios in London, Oxford and Rome.
