The Departure of the Argonaut by Francesco Clemente Alberto Sauvinio (portfolio)

1986

About the Item

The Departure of the Argonaut (1918) is the travelogue and wartime diary of Alberto Savinio, one of the seminal figures in twentieth-century Italian arts and letters. Clemente's accompanying images transcend traditional illustration, providing a subtle balance between the fantasy of the artist and the visual ideas of the text. Each chapter is treated in a fresh and different style, and in each a unity of word and image is achieved that represents the art of the illustrated book at its most ambitious. Clemente has stated that during his work on this project he became fascinated, as never before in his career, with the technical aspects of printmaking. He has used a broad range of lithographic techniques and materials to produce a remarkable variety of visual effects. His illumination of the text is a richly personal work, inventive, witty, and elegant. Published as both a limited edition bound volume, and a portfolio edition of the 50 unbound, double paged spreads. Hand signed by the artist on the colophon page and numbered in type. 50 double page spreads with 48 original lithographs on Okawara mould made paper Each open page 26 x 40 in. Fjord by Henry Moore drawing of Scottish landscape for W.H. Auden poetry book
By Henry Moore
Located in New York, NY
One of a series of 18 lithographs drawn by the artist for the Auden Poems/Moore Lithographs 1974 book and portfolio. This work is from an edition of 25 printed on vellum aside from the portfolio (edition of 75) and the book. Signed by the artist lower right in pencil; numbered 8/25 lower left in pencil. Printed in inky black, Fjord features a close-up view of the water as it meets the shore. Yorkshire is famous for its rocky coastline, where fishing villages cling to cliffs, windswept abbeys peak above the skyline, and sand beaches attract families on vacation. Moore’s scene is dark and even sinister – the shore’s narrow inlets reaching into the water like gnarled fingers. Fjord displays Moore’s fascination with light and dark – what he called a “…bias towards the blackness and mysterious depths.” Moore was inspired by the prints of Rembrandt and the drawings of Seurat, and even drew on his memories of viewing the Altamira cave paintings, recalling how some of the images used the shadow of candlelight on the rough surface of the rock to model light. Shortly before starting work on this series of lithographs, Moore had fallen ill, leaving him aware of his own mortality. His mood pervaded these prints with a sense of danger and foreboding. Fjord is one of a group of lithographs...

Assemblee des Rabbins et Notables.. original lithograph by Theo Tobiasse
By Théo Tobiasse
Located in Paonia, CO
Assemblee des Rabbins et Notables au 16 siecle  dans un village de Lithuanie is an original artist proof ( E. A. ) lithograph by  Theo Tobiasse (b.1927 -2012) , an internationally successful French painter, engraver, illustrator, and sculptor. He grew up in Paris during the Nazi occupation. His work has great depth and originality as he seeks to express the inner world of man.  Perhaps the hardships he and his family endured helped define his artistic expression. He has had many exhibitions around the world, in Paris at the Drouant gallery, in Geneva, Montreal or Tokyo, then London, Zurich, Lauzanne, Los Angeles, Kyiv. He also had a solo exhibition in New York and many more shows world wide over the years.  A visit to Jerusalem in 1970 brought him closer to his Jewish origins. He created his first stained glass windows on the theme of “Jewish Holidays” for the Jewish Community Center in Nice and a monumental oil on canvas entitled Que tes tentes sont belles, ô Jacob (1982). He traveled and immersed himself in the cultures he encountered, the jazz of New Orleans, Mexican archaeological sites and Native American totems. In New York, he met Elie Wiesel...
