About the Item
Curarlos y a otra is an original artwork realized by the great Spanish artist Francisco Goya in 1810. Original etching on paper.
The artwork belongs to the famous print collection Los Desastres de la Guerra realized during the years of the Independence Spanish War and published for the first time in 1863, representing the horrors and sorrows of war.
Signed and dated 1810 on plate on the lower left, half-hidden by the etching line. Titled on the lower central margin "Curarlos y à otra" (Threat them and then go ahead). Numbered on the upper left corner. Etching n. 20.
Very good conditions.
French injured soldiers, almost dying, are patched up and put back on the front as soon as possible. The scene is completed by a landscape of corpses. This print aims at depicting the pathetic nature of military illness. The broken branches of the trees in the background symbolize the wounded soldiers. The dying soldier on the left seems a prelude to Goya's canvas, taken care of by Arrieta, and a secularization of the iconography of Michelangelo's Pietà.

Francisco Goya
Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828) was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker. He is considered the most important Spanish artist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His works often contained a social message, like in his "Disasters of War" series. Immensely successful in his lifetime, Goya is often referred to as both the last of the Old Masters and the first of the moderns. He was also one of the great portraitists of his time.
