The curlew is an iconic bird of moors and marshes with a beautiful call. But it is now shares the same conservation status as the Jaguar . . . it is at risk of extinction in the near future. This hand printed woodcut is inspired by the curlews that I still see and hear in the Severn Estuary. It is created by printing multiple layers, each one building up texture and colour. Before the ink dried I inscribed words onto the bird and into the soft curves and patterns of the landscape. Each woodcut in this series is individually printed and uniquely inscribed. Some inscriptions tell the story of the curlew's plight while this one reminds us that we will only care about something once we have seen it. . . and now you too have seen it!
