Hippolyte Bellangé
Retour de L'Ile d'Elbe - Etching by Hippolyte Bellangé - 1837

1837

About the Item

Retour de l'ile d'Elbe is an etching that belongs to the suite AtlasBatt realized for Jacques Norvins Histoire de Napoleon, published in 1837. Author Jacques Norvins published one of the most comprehensive and influential histories on the life and military career of Napoleon. 22x14 cm. Good conditions except for some yellow on the margins. Napoleon's return occurred while the Congress of Vienna was taking place, which hastened, on March 13, to declare Napoleon an "outlaw". The following March 25, the United Kingdom, the Russian Empire, the Austrian Empire and Prussia formed the Seventh Coalition, which other nations later joined, committing themselves militarily to depose Napoleon once and for all. The decision laid the foundations for the last conflict in the Napoleonic Wars, which ended with the defeat of the French general at Waterloo on June 18, 1815 after the clashes of Quatre-Bras and Ligny, for the second restoration of the French monarchy and for Napoleon's permanent exile on the island of Sant'Elena, where he died on May 5, 1821.
