About the Item

A surreal juxtaposition of geometric forms and uncannily realistic pedestrians forms the composition of this moody screen print. Framed by a flat of charcoal grey, a man in shadow is caught mid-step on the sidewalk, his blue shadow cast darkly over light grey bricks. Translucent orange bands float to his left, disrupting this mundane scene with a sense of altered reality. As a photo realist, Howard Kanovitz sought to challenge what is thought of as reality, rather than replicate it. Kanovitz reacted to the emotional punch of abstract expressionism with uncanny compositions and flat planes of color, suggesting a world of ambiguities between the seen and unseen. Of the artist, Chuck Close said: “His influence was that he made working from photographs seem like a good idea.” Paper 35.5 x 27.25 in. / 90 x 69 cm Image 31.5 x 24 in. / 80 x 61 cm Edition 100: This impression 76/100.
