About the Item
A surreal juxtaposition of geometric forms and uncannily realistic pedestrians forms the composition of this moody screen print. Framed by a flat of charcoal grey, a man in shadow is caught mid-step on the sidewalk, his blue shadow cast darkly over light grey bricks. Translucent orange bands float to his left, disrupting this mundane scene with a sense of altered reality.
As a photo realist, Howard Kanovitz sought to challenge what is thought of as reality, rather than replicate it. Kanovitz reacted to the emotional punch of abstract expressionism with uncanny compositions and flat planes of color, suggesting a world of ambiguities between the seen and unseen. Of the artist, Chuck Close said: “His influence was that he made working from photographs seem like a good idea.”

Howard Kanovitz
Howard Kanovitz was a pioneering painter in the Photorealist and Hyperrealist Movements, which emerged in the 1960s and 1970s in response to the abstract art movement. Howard Kanovitz, born in Fall River, Massachusetts, began painting in 1949, after an early career as a jazz trombonist. He studied at The Rhode Island School of Design and at The Art Students League in Woodstock with Yasu Kunyyoshi, before moving to New York City and apprenticing with Franz Kline.
