Jacques Villon
Le Banc de Pierre

An important French painter, printmaker and illustrator, Villon learned printmaking at an early age from his grandfather, an amateur artist. In 1899, he began creating depictions of bourgeois society women and children, which would remain his subject matter for the next ten years. Le Banc de Pierre (The Stone Bench), portrays Villon's sister, artist Suzanne Duchamp, seated in profile on a stone bench. She wears a long black coat and a broad brimmed hat decorated with cherries and holds what appears to be a parasol on her lap; the sketchily rendered foliage and fence in the background suggest a park setting. What is most remarkable about this piece, aside from its serene beauty, is its exquisite range of linear effects. To create this drypoint, Villon incised the image directly onto a copperplate using a sharp tool, creating furrows with "burr," a buildup of copper at the edges of each incision. When inked, this burr created fuzzy, velvety lines, that give the composition a soft richness. As lines have either more or less burr, they appear more or less sharp. This variety of linear effects creates a complex, lively surface. Executed in 1908, on the cusp of Villon's transition to Cubism, Le Banc de Pierre can be considered a stylistically transitional work, combining an elegant fin-de-siecle portrayal with a more rigorous cubist aesthetic. Villon's use of vigorously crosshatched lines to convey mass and depth is a practice that became a hallmark of his later Cubist style. This beautiful and rare impression was printed in a very small edition of 20. Drypoint, printed in black on Arches paper Signed "Jacques Villon" in pencil in the lower right margin Numbered "17/20" in pencil in the lower left margin (from the edition of 20) Paper size: 21 1/4 x 16 5/8 inches Published by Edmond Sagot, Paris Reference: Ginestet & Pouillon 236 Framed in a yellow gold leaf frame with silk mat
