Jim Dine
Vintage Jim Dine Green Bathrobe exhibition poster, 1970s retro pop art font

1971

About the Item

This original, vintage poster on poster stock features one of Jim Dine's most iconic motifs: the bathrobe. In 1964, Dine saw an ad in the New York Times: “The ad shows a robe with the man airbrushed out of it. There was nobody in the bathrobe, but when I saw it, it looked like me.” Standing in for the artist's own body and rife with personal meaning, it provides a framework for limitless formal and stylistic experimentation. Here, the garment is colored bright green and defined by variegated black lines. Numbers label each part of the robe as in an anatomical chart. Bold black lettering reads Jim Dine, Petersburg Press. The poster is one of six posters designed by the artist for his 1971 European traveling retrospective exhibition. This poster comes from the Petersburg Press archives where it has been stored since its publication in 1971. Offset lithograph on thick, cream paper 30.7 x 22 in. / 78 x 56 cm.

Bokan - camouflage pink, 2009 by Takashi Murakami Offset print, numbered and signed by the artist 19 11/16 × 19 11/16 in 50 × 50 cm Edition 71/300 About the Artist: Takashi Murakami is best known for his contemporary combination of fine art and pop culture. He uses recognizable iconography like Doraemon and cartoonish flowers and infuses it with Japanese culture. The result is a colorful body of work that takes the shape of paintings, sculptures and animations. In the 1990s, Murakami founded the Superflat movement in an attempt to expose the "shallow emptiness of Japanese consumeristic culture." The artist plays on the familiar aesthetic of mangas, Japanese-language comics, to render works that appear popular and accessible, all the while denouncing the universality and impersonality of consumer goods. Murakami has done collaborations with numerous brands and celebrities including Kanye West, Louis Vuitton...
