He studied at the Art Students League under George Bridgman, and at the Nahum Tschacbasov School of Art, also in New York. Barton regularly incorporated sand, concrete and other materials into his oil painting and murals, and occasionally his prints, creating both a visual and tactile experience in his work. Some of his numerous commissions included murals at the New York Board of Education, and a "History of Money" mural at the South Carolina State Bank. He frequently collaborated with other artists, and also had many one-man shows at Fantasy Gallery in Washington, DC and Hudson Gallery in New York. He has been a lecturer on technique and creative expression at many universities throughout the East Coast until his death in 2000. Today his work can be found in various important institutions, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, the New York Public Library, the Haifa Museum of Modern Art in Israel, the Brooklyn Museum, the Fort Worth Art Center, the Oakland Museum, the Yale University Museum, and many other collections around the globe both public and private.

Jacob Steinhardt Woodcut Print "Rachel Weeping For Her Children" Signed Numbered
By Jacob Steinhardt
Located in Detroit, MI
“A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.” This verse from Jeremiah 31:15 is the subject of this woodcut print by Jacob Steinhardt, depicting Rachel, who was the mother of the tribes of Joshua and Benjamin, and who was the wife of Jacob who was Israel, weeping for her children which is to be understood as after the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem, the Israelites were clustered into Ramah, the home of the Benjaminites, before being taken into the Babylonian captivity; Rachel is weeping for the destruction and expulsion of her descendants. This work is exemplary of the Jewish themes of Jacob Steinhardt, a German Jew...
