About the Item
Woodcut in black (sumizuri-e) realized by Hokusai between 1807 and 1811. Plate from the series "Chinsetsu Yumiharizuki" (Strange Tales of the Moonbow).
A lifetime impression, in very good condition, inserted in modern cardboard matte.
At the age of forty, Hokusai, along with the novelist Takizawa Bakin (1767–1848), devoted himself to the genre of popular printed literature called yomihon, literally "books for reading." These were illustrated adventure stories, published in serial form, translating and adapting Chinese tales or weaving colorful tales based on Japanese historical figures, in this case the samurai warrior Minamoto no Tametomo (1139–1170).
Chinsetsu Yumiharizuki, 1807–1811, eventually ran to twenty-nine volumes, making the fortune of publisher Hirabayashi Shogoro.
