Provenance: private collection - former Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard, Phoenix, AZ. Printed in five colors: black, green, orange, violet, and yellow. Poster designed by Haring for the very first National Coming Out Day on October 11, 1988 on behalf of the National Gay Rights Advocates, West Hollywood, CA. National Coming Out Day was initiated in 1988 by gay and lesbian organizations and has taken place ever since on October 11. Haring's picture would, with different lettering, become an unofficial logo for National Coming Out Day. Haring was a prolific poster-maker, and among all his personally created posters, this particular work "National Coming Out Day" was chosen and featured on the front cover of the most recent updated official catalogue raisonne of posters by Haring authored by Jurgen Döring and Claus von der Osten from 2017, (shown in last photo, the book is not included).
Initially administered from the West Hollywood offices of the National Gay Rights Advocates, the first NCOD received participation from eighteen states, garnering national media coverage. In its second year, NCOD headquarters moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and participation grew to 21 states. After a media push in 1990, NCOD was observed in all 50 states and seven other countries. Participation continued to grow and in 1990 NCOD merged their efforts with the Human Rights Campaign.

Biography:
One of the key figures in New York's East Village art scene in the 1970s and 1980s, Keith Haring (1958 – 1990) developed a unique and distinctly personal vocabulary of bold, graphic icons—barking dogs, flying saucers, winged figures, and a crawling "radiant baby"—which he combined with abstract marks and patterns in densely packed, compositions.
Raised in Pennsylvania, Haring briefly attended the Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburgh before relocating to New York City and enrolling in The School of Visual Arts. In New York, he was swept up in the energy and spirit of the thriving alternative art community that was developing in the downtown streets, the subways and dance halls. Also drawn to the interactive nature of Christo’s installations and how art and life intersected in Andy Warhol’s work, Haring devoted his career to creating public art that could be enjoyed by art admirers of all ages.
Throughout his career, Haring devoted much of his time to public works, which often carried social messages. Between 1982 and 1989, he produced more than 50 public artworks in dozens of cities around the world, many of which were created for charities, hospitals, children’s day care centers and orphanages. Hi Crack is Wack mural (1986) is a landmark along New York’s FDR Drive, and the same year he worked with 900 children to create a mural for the centennial of the Statue of Liberty.
Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988, and during the last years of his life he used his imagery to speak about his own illness and increase awareness about AIDS. In 1989, he established the Keith Haring Foundation with the intention of providing funding to AIDS organizations and children’s programs, and to expand the audience for his work through exhibitions and image licensing. Keith Haring died of AIDS related complications at the age of 31 on February 16, 1990.

Keith Haring
Keith Haring began experimenting with his bold, graphic lines and cartoon-inspired figures on the walls of New York City subway stations in the early 1980s. He called them his “laboratory,” places to develop a radical new aesthetic based on an ideology of creating truly democratic public art.
Haring’s paintings, prints and murals address the universal themes of death, love and sex, as well as contemporary issues he experienced personally, like the crack-cocaine and AIDS epidemics. They derive much of their impact from the powerful contrast between these serious subjects and the joyful, vibrant pictographic language he uses to express them, full of dancing figures, babies, barking dogs, hearts and rhythmic lines, as well as references to pop culture.
To make his art even more accessible, in 1986, Haring opened the Pop Shop in Soho. In a foreshadowing of today’s intermingling of art and fashion, the shop sold merchandise and novelty items featuring imagery by Haring and contemporaries like Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat. While his works sometimes included text, for the most part, he chose to communicate through drawing.
“Drawing is still basically the same as it has been since prehistoric times,” Haring once declared. “It lives through magic.”

Biography:
American artist Roy Lichtenstein was born in New York City on October 27, 1923, and grew up on Manhattan's Upper West Side. In the 1960s, Lichtenstein became a leading figure of the new Pop Art movement. Inspired by advertisements and comic strips, Lichtenstein's bright, graphic works parodied American popular culture and the art world itself. He died in New York City on September 29, 1997.
Lichtenstein was committed to his art until the end of his life, often spending at least 10 hours a day in his studio. His work was acquired by major museum collections around the world, and he received numerous honorary degrees and awards, including the National Medal of Arts in 1995. In 2013 the painting "Woman with Flowered Hat" set another record at $56.1 million as it was purchased by British jeweler Laurence Graff...

Keith Haring rose to prominence in 1980s New York within the East Village art scene alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kenny Scharf, and Jenny Holzer. He bridged the gap between the art world and the street, graffiting city subways and sidewalks before committing to a studio practice. Haring united the appeal of cartoons with the raw energy of Art Brut artists such as Jean DuBuffet as he developed a distinct pop-graffiti aesthetic that comprised energetic, boldly outlined figures against solid or patterned backdrops. His major themes included exploitation, subjugation, drug abuse, and the threat of nuclear holocaust; Haring boldly engaged with social issues, especially after receiving an AIDS diagnosis in 1987. Today, his work sells for seven figures at auction and has been the subject of solo shows at the Brooklyn Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Albertina Museum in Vienna, among other institutions.
