About the Item
This artwork titled "Delassement (Relaxation)" 1901, is an original etching and aquatint by renown French artist Louis Auguste Mathieu Legrand, 1863-1951. The plate mark (Image) size is 7.20 x 5.15 inches, sheet size is 11 x 7.25 inches, framed size is 18.5 x 15.5 inches. Aside from the edition of 130, one of the 10 Hors commerce impressions, fourth state of six. Published by Gustave Pellet, Paris and printed by Philippe Renouard, Paris. Referenced in the artist's catalogue raisonee by Arwas, #A194 and Exteens #171. Custom framed in an ornate wooden gold frame, with fabric matting and gold color bevel. It is in excellent condition.
About the artist:
Louis Legrand was born in 1963 in Dijon. Painter, watercolourist, engraver and illustrator, he is a multifaceted artist.
After training at the School of Fine Arts in Dijon, he went to Paris in 1884 and became the student of the brilliant and sulphurous Félicien Rops who introduced him to various techniques including engraving. The teacher appreciates the aptitudes of his pupil. In a letter dated 1888 from Félicien Rops to Mr Roques, director of the weekly “ Le Courrier Français ” he evokes “the precious and rare qualities, dominated by an extraordinary love of Louis Legrand’s modeling”. he also writes “You can imagine that it never occurred to me to teach this fellow! Legrand began without help, like ducklings going to the pond, to make beautiful drawings which attracted the attention of artists and amateurs.
From 1902, the artist participated in the Salons des Beaux Arts in Paris, at the Universal Exhibition of 1900 where he won a medal.
He also exhibited at the Samuel Bing gallery and then in 1904 at the Georges Petit gallery. He was decorated with the Legion of Honor in 1906.
In 1911, the Durand-Ruel gallery presented a major retrospective of his work.
Before Toulouse-Lautrec, he depicted the Parisian nightlife of the Belle Epoque, the lively cafés, the women, the cancan dancers.
The Moulin Rouge ball in Paris has long been the artist’s studio.
The publisher and art collector Gustave Pellet publishes 300 engravings from him and buys all his pastels from him. He also engraves erotic subjects for him.
He is the painter of “gay eroticism”.
The work of Louis Legrand is held in numerous collections and museums worldwide, including, The Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco and the Smithsonian in Washington DC.

Louis Legrand
Louis Legrand was born in Dijon, France, on September 29, 1863. He worked as a bank teller and studied art at the Dijon Ecole des Beaux-Arts in his spare time. At the age of 20, he won the Devosge prize at that school and a year later left for Paris. Legrand arrived in Paris in 1884, where he studied under Felicien Rops and soon became famous for his paintings, drawings and etchings depicting the Parisian beau-monde. A superb draughtsman, his etchings also show great sophistication. Legrand's prints were almost all published by Gustave Pellet, who published many erotic images.

Born (Kaikobad Motiwalla) in Bombay, India on December 15, 1921, Moti was first educated at the Bombay School of Fine Arts but his talent led him onwards to study at the University College in London (on scholarship) and at the Slade School of Fine Arts, London, where he received a Master's degree in Painting and Sculpture. While still in London he studied under MacWilliam and Reginald Butler.
Eventually moving to Paris in 1950, Moti attended the Academie de la Grand Chaumiere, Atelier Zadkine, to pursue his love of sculpture but lack of space soon compelled him to turn his attention to working on copper plates and he studied engraving with William Stanley Hayter...
