About the Item

It's clear to me that that baby carriage is so beautifully drawn that it could be re-constructed from here if necessary. Without really knowing anything about Lucile Haynes I'm sure she studied with Kenneth Hayes Miller at the Art Students League. These are his Fourteenth Street matrons, but depicted in a gentler, more empathetic manner. And of course the medium of etching makes that connection too -- in one or two years lithography will come to dominate scenes like this and in fact Hayes did make lithographs after this. It is signed and dated in pencil and also signed and dated in the plate, at the lower left. The pin holes in the margins are from the method of drying the sheet so that it would stay flat. These are not condition flaws.
