About the Item

A rare signed, original, artist's proof lithograph (épreuve d'artiste). Throughout his career, Chagall produced colored lithographs such as “La Tour Eiffel Verte.” (Green Eiffel Tower). This small work still manages to incorporate color as it relates to shape and gender. Through only a few lines, Chagall creates a scene of romace and intimacy through gestures and distinguished figures that align with the recognizable architecture of Paris. This artist’s proof indicates a romanticism Chagall possessed for the city he lived and worked in for a good part of his life: Paris. The simple shapes and colors of this work offer a minimalist lens through which the viewer can see intimacy juxtaposed with the recognizable architecture of the Eiffel Tower. Marc Chagall was born in Russia in 1887, completing some preliminary art education there before moving to Paris where he solidified his artistic presence. His works often draw inspiration from the Bible and his own faith of Judaism along with Russian folklore to create otherworldly pieces. Chagall’s work persisted through the Russian Revolution and Two World Wars, through which he maintained his pictures as he traveled through Europe and America. Today, he is recognized for his unique imagery and aesthetics, which mark him as a key artist of the 20th century.
