Marc Chagall
La Tranchée - Etching by M. Chagall - 1977

1977

About the Item

La Tranchée is a beautiful black and white etching on watermarked BFK Rives paper, realized in 1958 by the artist Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - St. Paul de Vence, 1985). This is an original print from the illustrated volume Et sur la terre by Andrè Malraux, published by Maeght Ed., in 1977, Paris. Edition of 225 prints, (of which 25 specimens are on Japon Imperial). Unique state. Lifetime impression, all uncut original margins. Et sur la terre This wonderful volume is the result of the collaboration between artists and old friends: Marc Chagall and Andrè Malraux, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, warrior of the Resistance against the Nazi regime and Minister of Culture under Charles de Gaulle government. The work is an elaboration of a previous unpublished text written by Malraux in 1939, based on his memories and personal experiences during the Spanish Civil War, fighting on the Republican side against the dictatorship of Franco and his Fascist and Nazi allies. Richly illustrated with 15 beautiful black and white etchings and aquatints by Marc Chagall. This book was published by Maeght Editeur in Paris in 1977, in an edition of 205 copies on velin d'Rives, numbered 1 to 205, signed on the colophon. The first 25 portfolios contained an additional impression on the frontispiece, signed and numbered by Chagall. The copper plates were canceled after having been printed by Jacques Frélaut and Roger Lacourière. ARMODIO (1938) Abstract Composition Original Etching Signed and justified c.p.a Dimensions: 49,5 x 34,5 cm. Armodio was born in Piacenza in 1938. His training depends not so much on the attendance of the "Gazzola" Art Institute in his city, but also on the encounter with the painter Luciano Spazzali, whose study is the ideal place for experimentation and contamination. Here he met the painter Gustavo Foppiani, first teacher and then a fellow traveler; the two work together and then join the painter Carlo Bertè who will divide the study until 1980. This formed a free grouping animated by curiosity towards the most varied manifestations of culture, intent on reading reality under the sign of irony and inclined towards playful transgression. The first Piacenza personal exhibition was in 1963 at the Genocchi Gallery in Piacenza and in 1964, thanks to Foppiani, the Obelisk of Rome...

Salvador Dali - Nude with Parrots - Original Etching Dimensions: 38 x 28 cm Edition: 235 1967 Embossed signature On Arches Vellum References : Field 67-10 (p. 34-35) Salvador Dali Salvador Dali was born as the son of a prestigious notary in the small town of Figueras in Northern Spain. His talent as an artist showed at an early age and Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali received his first drawing lessons when he was ten years old. His art teachers were a then well known Spanish impressionist painter, Ramon Pichot and later an art professor at the Municipal Drawing School. In 1923 his father bought his son his first printing press. Dali began to study art at the Royal Academy of Art in Madrid. He was expelled twice and never took the final examinations. His opinion was that he was more qualified than those who should have examined him. In 1928 Dali went to Paris where he met the Spanish painters Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro. He established himself as the principal figure of a group of surrealist artists grouped around Andre Breton, who was something like the theoretical "schoolmaster" of surrealism. Years later Breton turned away from Dali accusing him of support of fascism, excessive self-presentation and financial greediness. By 1929 Dali had found his personal style that should make him famous the world of the unconscious that is recalled during our dreams. The surrealist theory is based on the theories of the psychologist Dr. Sigmund Freud. Recurring images of burning giraffes and melting watches...
