About the Item
Clock is etching on paper, realized by the French artist and print-maker master Mario Avati (1921-2009).
Hand-signed on the lower right and numbered on the lower left in pencil. Edition of 52/100 prints.
In excellent conditions.
The original artwork with a superb technique, representing a big clock on a theatrical scene, well- defined silhouette, a combination of fantasy and the imaginary world with a touch of subjective interpretation which demonstrates a ludic and playful approach to dimensions.
Mario Avati (1921-2009) is a French painter and engraver, remembered as the foremost mezzotint artist, after Yozo Hamaguchi. After attending the National School of Decorative Arts in Nice and the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Mario Avati practiced, from 1947, all printmaking techniques, contributing to the revival of graphic techniques as popular artists' media.
His favorite graphic technique, applied to his timeless still lifes, is the mezzotint, among the most demanding, abandoned because it was "too difficult", but with the final result of an emerging image from a deep black "nothingness". Avati's international fame is confirmed by numerous awards, documentary films made in Japan, in the USA and in Europe and an uncountable number of participations in exhibitions and art events all over the world.

Mario Avati
Mario Avati along with fellow artist Marc Chagall attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He began printmaking in the 1940s and later focused on mezzotint, a technique that would bring Avanti significant international recognition for his discipline. As a fellow at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in the 1960s, he furthered his exploration of mezzotint, with the interplay of intense blackness with gradations of light that define the mezzotint process.

Mid Century Modern British 'What's the Time?' by British German Kapp, 1975
Located in Petworth, West Sussex
Eduard Xavier Kapp (British, 1890 – 1978)
What’s the Time?
Pen and crayon, tondo
Signed and dated ‘Kapp 75’ (in the centre)
8.1/2 x 8.1/2 in. (21.6 x 21.6 cm.)
Edmond Kapp was born in Islington, London, on 5 November 1890, of American and German Jewish parentage. He gave himself the middle initial ‘X’ – sometimes said to stand for Xavier – to distinguish himself from his father Emil Kapp, who was a wine merchant. However, his parents called him ‘Eddie’ while his wife and friends knew him as ‘Peter’.
During his early years, Kapp was continually ill and, while convalescing, entertained himself by drawing at home. As his health improved, he attended Dame Alice Owen’s School, Islington (1903-10), with periods at Berlin University (1909) and L’Institut Français pour les Etrangers, Paris (1909). He then read Languages at Christ’s College, Cambridge (1910-13), though spent most of his time writing and drawing.
Kapp took a studio in London, and worked intensively until the outbreak of the First World War, contributing to the Daily News, the Onlooker and other periodicals. During the war, he served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Sussex Regiment on the Western Front, and then in Intelligence, rising to the position of Staff Captain on Haig’s Staff. Finally, he founded and directed the Neutral Press Counter-propaganda Section.
In 1919, Kapp returned to London and, after abortive periods at three art schools, worked alone. In that year, he made his name with an exhibition of caricatures, held at Furst’s Gallery, London, and accompanied by a catalogue introduced by Max Beerbohm. This soon led to contracts with three London periodicals and a book of caricatures, Personalities, published by Martin Secker. Through the 1920s and 30s, his drawings of musicians and other personalities appeared in a wide variety of periodicals, most notably Time & Tide; were collected in further volumes; and were exhibited at the Leicester Galleries. He considered himself to be a ‘character-portraitist’, producing images of psychological not satirical power, and disliking the term ‘caricature’.
Between the wars, Kapp developed other aspects of his artistic talents, the desire to study and the search for subject matter often taking him abroad. For instance, work at the British Academy, Rome, under Antonio Sciortino...

Illusion Watch, Pen & Ink on Paper, Black by Modern Indian Artist “In Stock”

Shuvaprasanna Bhattacharya - Untitled - (unframed size)
Pen & Ink on Paper , 11 x 8 inches , 2009 (Delivered)
One of the most popular series of the Master Artist, The Golden Flute is the artists more romantic renedition of Art. The iconic figures of Krishna, Radha, and Ganesha that found lyrical expression in the Icons series are modern representations and sophisticated idealizations of the same images in the popular media.
Krishna is a cosmic musician, and the tune he creates by playing his transcendental flute is embodied with cosmic energy. When Krishna is depicted as being between the age of 5 and 8, it is always with his flute. Therefore, during this period, he is aptly called Murlidhara (murali means “flute,” and dhara means “hold”), signifying the one who holds the flute. He is never without it, whether he is with his mother, on the grazing grounds with his herd of cows, among his cowherd companions or roaming around on the Jamuna banks. Gopis lose their selves in this tune. For them, music becomes the voice of love, which is too passionate and secretive.
Style :
The city of Kolkata has always figured prominently in his work. His themes come from his personal interactions with its urban milieu - its sickness and sordidness, its violence and vulnerability and all that compounds its existential agony. Shuvaprasanna has depicted varying moods of the city and its people, its places, and all its facets that make the city distinctive.
He doesn't merely portray reality as 'matter of fact' and his presentation of reality often has dream-like elements in it. In terms of technique, Shuvaprasanna boasts a precise, finely executed style that yields an unmistakable visual intensity. He works comfortably in an assortment of media, including oil on canvas, charcoal, and mixed media.
About the Artist and his work :
Born : In Calcutta, 1947.
Education :
Graduated from Indian College of Art (R.B. University, Calcutta) in 1969.
Exhibitions :
Shuvaprasanna has had several gallery and museum exhibitions, including at the Tao Art Gallery and at the Chawla Art Gallery, Square One Mall. Several works by the artist have been sold at auction, including 'ABODE' sold at Waddington's 'Fine Prints & Photography Auction' in 2014.
