Printed and published by Editions Press, San Francisco and with their blindstamp. Four prints by this artist, including this one. Painter, printmaker, illustrator, graphic designer and art director, Roy Carruthers was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa and first studied at the Port Elizabeth Technical College Art School. From 1956, he worked as an art director and graphic designer in South Africa and, after 1960, in London. In 1968, he immigrated to the United States and worked in the advertising industry in New York. In 1974, Carruthers started his own graphic design firm while pursuing his career as a fine artist producing original paintings, drawings and etchings. His collaboration with Editions Press in San Francisco produced both sculpture and color lithographs, of which this work is a pristine example. He also maintained an academic career, teaching graphic techniques at Manhattan's School for the Visual Arts. Over the course of a distinguished career, Roy Carruthers exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards including a gold medal from the Society of Illustrators (1973). His work continued to be exhibited in South Africa and the United States and throughout Europe. In 1982, he returned to South Africa as a guest of the South African Government and was honored with a touring museum exhibition of his work. Includes protective tissue paper dividers between each piece. Image size: 14"H x 11"W Patricia Pearce is a California artist who attended San Francisco State and UC Irvine and is the adjunct Professor of Fine Art at the College of San Mateo. Her early work on paper explored images of garments using various printmaking techniques. Later, she began to work mainly in collagraph and monotype prints creating singular images of kimonos and ribbons in her subtle shifting, subdued pieces are constructed in a three-step process. Signed in pencil with "imp" next to the signature. In the bottom right corner is a penciled 75 and in the top right corner is a 50. The etching is framed and was taken out of the frame for condition report and photographs. The gallery label is on the back of the matte inside the frame. Dimensions without Frame: H 15 in x W 9.5 in. Artist Biography: Martin Lewis (1881-1962) was born in Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia on 7 June 1881. He was the second of eight children and had a passion for drawing. At the age of 15, he left home and traveled in New South Wales, Australia, and in New Zealand, working as a pothole digger and a merchant seaman. He returned to Sydney and settled into a Bohemian community outside Sydney. Two of his drawings were published in the radical Sydney newspaper, The Bulletin. He studied with Julian Ashton at the Art Society's School in Sydney. Ashton, an English-born Australian artist and teacher, known for his support of the Heidelberg School and for his influential art school in Sydney.
