Angel More
(Mother of Us All)
Screenprint in colors on Arches, 1977
Impression 14 of an edition of 150
Image Size: 18” x 14”

Printed by Mourlot, Paris.

Sheehan 96-108.
The Mother of Us All, is an opera which imaginatively chronicles the story of Susan B. Anthony and the women's suffrage movement, written by Gertrude Stein and composed by Virgil Thompson in 1945. In 1976 Robert Indiana was hired to create the costumes and set design for the Santa Fe Opera Company’s production of The Mother to Us All. This collection of lithographs illustrates Indiana's costume designs for the Virgil Thomson-Gertrude Stein same-titled opera.
Robert Indiana is one of the most recognized names in Contemporary and Pop Art, his LOVE sculptures, paintings, and prints are by far his most iconic pieces. It all began in the summer of 1965, when The Museum of Modern Art commissioned Indiana to design its Christmas card. He submits LOVE in four color possibilities; the museum selects the red, blue, and green version. In 1967 he produces three serigraphs of LOVE, and two serigraphs of LOVE Wall. During the next two years, produces other serigraph variations on LOVE, with more following in 1972, 1973, 1975, 1982, and 1991. Indiana’s LOVE motif has since been translated into a US postage stamp...

1930s Modernist Print by Hilaire Hiler: Indian with Bow in Fox Costume Artwork
Located in Denver, CO
This vintage 1934 color serigraph (silkscreen print) by Hilaire Hiler (1898-1966) depicts a Native American figure dressed in a fox costume and holding a bow, showcasing a stylized feather headdress and bold black, red, and white color contrasts. Created during the WPA era, this modernist print reflects Hiler's semi-abstract approach to Native American themes. The print is pencil signed by the artist in the lower right margin and titled on the verso.
About the Artist, Hilaire Hiler:
Hilaire Hiler was an influential New Mexico artist known for his modernist style and exploration of Native American subjects. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Hiler studied at prestigious art institutions such as the University of Paris and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before moving to Paris in 1919. Hiler was active in the European avant-garde scene, supporting himself as a jazz musician.
In 1934, he returned to America, where he was commissioned by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) to create murals for the Aquatic Park...

“I paint because painting is a private Utopia,” Erró writes of his art. The landscapes in Erró’s work are a constantly changing kaleidoscope of images, multivalent and mysterious, not infrequently controversial, bursting with life – and titillating, too! There is room in his pictures for both paradise and visions of fear. Erró is the alias of Gudmundur Gudmundsson, born on 19 July 1932 in Olafsvik, in north-western Iceland. Since Gudmundur first became enthralled by pictures of works of art in a catalogue from the Museum of Modern Art in New York at the tender age of ten, painting has been his passion and his mission in life. He was accepted into art school in Reykjavik as a 19-year old, subsequently complementing what he had learned there with further studies in Oslo. Erró travelled extensively in Spain, Italy, France and Germany in the 1950s, studying at the Florence Academy of Art in 1954 and at the School of Byzantine Mosaic Art in Ravenna in 1955. It was around this time that he began to exhibit his works, first and foremost in Paris, where he chose to make his home in 1958. During the 1960s he established contact with the Swedish museum director Pontus Hultén, who encouraged him and took him under his wing. Over the years Erró has taken part in hundreds of exhibitions and today his works are on show in museums all over the world, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Erró’s pictorial world is peopled by comic-strip characters and autocratic despots alike. Donald Duck with his Daisy, Chip & Dale, and other Walt Disney creations are unselfconsciously juxtaposed with Greek gods and madonnas. Elsewhere the German dictator Adolf Hitler stands shoulder to shoulder with his Iraqi counterpart Saddam Hussein...
