"Familar Scene" is an original print in etching technique on ivory-colored cardboard , by Maurice Asselin (1882-1947).
In very good conditions.

This is an original print representing a familiar scene: a man and a woman standing in the kitchen.
Hand-signed in pencil, on the back of the print.
Maurice Asselin (1882-1947): French painter and engraver. Maurice Asselin is known in particular for his female figures, including numerous nudes, often captured in maternity scenes, in which he reached rare levels of delicacy. He was also the author of valuable still lifes and landscapes of Brittany, as well as a skilled watercolorist.

Maurice Asselin
Maurice Asselin is a painter and engraver, a member of the École de Paris. For the famous art historian, Bernard Dorival, Asselin was with André Dunoyer de Segonzac, Charles Dufresne, Paul-Elie Gernez and Henry de Waroquier, among the painters of the "realistic reaction" which to "idealism and photographic realism" of the academic tradition of the 19th century," prefer the frank realism of the Impressionists and the sincerity with which they questioned the nature. Against the unrealism of cubists, they pose as heirs of the independent masters of the third quarter of the 19th century. And Dorival strongly supports his statement by quoting our artist, "If you like painting, you will not only ask it to be a decoration for the walls of your home but first of all to be food for your life interior," thus professes Asselin who continues, "no brain combination, no theory can give birth to a work of art... Art springs from the marveled love of life."

Resist ground etching and engraving on BFK Rives wove paper, 20 x 36 inches (501 x 913 mm), full margins. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 49/175 in pencil, lower margin. In excellent condition with minor mat tone. A luminous, rich, and well-inked impression of this haunting image, with astonishing detail and depth. Intended to be a stand alone image in its inception, Family Reunion ended up spawning seven additional images, and became a sort of Primo Pensiero in the sprawling, masterpiece suite now known as Interiors. The suite took eight years to complete, and consists of works of varying format, psychological intensity, and subject matter. The thematic darkness in the eight images waxes and wanes, and Milton intentionally included several interlude works to lighten the tension he felt while composing several of the darker images. The first two in the series, Family Reunion, and Hotel Paradise Café, were meant to be companion pieces. The equilibrium of each composition is anchored on a central brooding figure; a man (perhaps based on a Thomas Eakins portrait of the American anthropologist Frank Hamilton...
