Paul Paeschke initially trained as an art teacher in Berlin. After passing his teaching exam, he attended the Berlin Academy of Arts from 1900 to 1906, where he was taught by Otto Brausewetter and Georg Ludwig Meyn. He perfected his graphic talent as a master student of Professor Karl Köpping, who ran a studio for copperplate engraving and etching at the academy.
Paeschke took part in the First World War as a simple reservist and worked at times as a war painter and contributor to the war newspaper "Die Wacht im Osten" (The Watch in the East). Numerous etchings of religious life in Vilnius, Lithuania (now Vilnius), and Lida, Belarus, bear witness to this period.
During World War II, Paeschke worked as an art teacher in Brandenburg, but continued to live in his Berlin apartment in Zehlendorf.
1930)
Paul Paeschke had been married to Jenny Paeschke, née Knittel (* June 4, 1868; † January 15, 1961) since March 27, 1909, but the marriage remained childless. The Paeschkes were friends with the painter Lovis Corinth and his wife Charlotte Berend-Corinth and spent three months studying in Greece with them. The Paeschkes also traveled to Spain with Charlotte Berend-Corinth in 1925. Paeschke later reported on another trip to Spain in a magazine article. Paeschke modeled as a soldier for Lovis Corinth's late painting "Ecce homo" from 1913.
Paul Paeschke died on June 10, 1943. His grave is located in the Zehlendorf Cemetery in Berlin (former grave site 009/553, honorary grave until 2009, no longer in existence today). .
Although Paeschke also created numerous oil paintings, his main work consists of etchings and lithographs, which he first presented to a wide audience in 1905 at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition. This was followed by numerous other exhibitions by the German Artists' Association, the Munich Secession, and the Berlin Secession, at which Paeschke was represented with his own works.
Paeschke achieved particular mastery in his etchings, which are very similar to the graphic works of the far more famous Impressionists Max Liebermann, Max Slevogt, and Lesser Ury. His pastel drawings are also remarkable, often radiating a special cheerfulness and weightlessness.
Extensive study trips took Paeschke to many parts of Germany and other European countries, especially Spain, Italy, and England, where he produced numerous drawings and paintings. Thematically, however, the focus of his work was clearly on motifs from Berlin and its surroundings. His depictions of large cities with their crowds of people are particularly characteristic of Paeschke's work.
Paul Paeschke's paintings are represented in many museums, including the Berlin City Museum, the Jewish Museum Berlin, the Berlinische Galerie, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
In 1975, the Berlin Museum dedicated a solo exhibition to Paeschke on his 100th birthday. In 2009/2010, he was represented in the large-scale Bielefeld exhibition "German Impressionism" with the oil painting "Leipziger Straße Berlin."
The exhibition "Streit am Wannsee – Von noblen Villen und Strandbadfreuden" (Controversy at Wannsee – Of Noble Villas and Beach Pleasures) at the Liebermann Villa in Berlin in 2017 featured works by Heinrich Zille, Max Liebermann, Philipp Franck, and Hugo Vogel, as well as an oil painting entitled "Wannsee" by Paul Paeschke.
Other noteworthy exhibitions featuring works by Paeschke include "Die Eroberung der Straße – Von Monet bis Grosz" (The Conquest of the Street – From Monet to Grosz) (Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt am Main, 2006), the double exhibition "Käthe Kollwitz / Paul Paeschke" (Steißlingen, 2007), and "The Beauty of the Big City – Berlin Pictures from Gaertner to Fetting" (Museum Ephraim-Palais, Berlin, 2018).

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Kerr Eby was born in 1890 in Tokyo, Japan, the son of Methodist missionaries from Canada. The family returned to Vancouver when Eby was only three, and he grew up studying art encouraged by his parents as his mother was from a family of prominent artists. By age twelve, he had lived in Vancouver, Kingston, Toronto and Bracebridge where he found work as a ‘printer’s devil’ on the local Bracebridge newspaper.
After graduating from high school in 1907, Eby moved to New York City to study art, first at the Pratt Institute, and later at the Art Students League. He enrolled in art classes at Pratt Institute while working for a lithographic firm earning $4.00 a week. His pay barely covered his room and drawing supplies. Within a year, starving and feeling defeated, he returned to Canada and was employed by a surveying party in Northern Ontario. Eby gradually regained his dream of becoming an artist, and in his spare time, he began to draw the surrounding wilderness landscapes. By fall he had returned to New York to attend night classes at the Art Students League while working for another lithographic firm. He spent several more summers surveying in Northern Ontario before he was able to make a living as an illustrator. During this period he formed several friendships with influential artists including John Henry Twachtman and Childe Hassam and joined a summer artists' colony founded by them at Cos Cob, Connecticut. He supported himself by working as a magazine illustrator and at the American Lithographic Company. Through diligent study and practice, Eby refined both his drawing and printmaking techniques.
In 1917, when the United States entered World War I, Eby joined the U.S. Army. Failing to obtain a commission as an artist, he was assigned first to ambulance duty and later as a sergeant in the 40th Engineers in France. He spent most of WWI on the front line as a camouflager of the field artillery ‘big guns”. On his time off duty, he would sketch everything he witnessed, from the explosive big guns and men in action to the dead soldiers in the field. He sent the drawings home each week, and upon his return from the war, they became the basis for his first successful group of etchings. He continued creating his war-related prints throughout the 1920s and '30s as his work became widely exhibited Frederick Keppel, the renowned print dealer and a relative of Eby, became the exclusive agent for many of his print editions.
With another global conflict beginning in the mid-1930s, Eby wanted to show the world the true face of war...
