About the Item
Three etchings representing the cycle of love, from Péri’s observations of people on the streets of London. These small prints were intended to be sold in groups as folding booklets, like postcards.
Artist: Peter László Péri
Date: 1940s
Framed size: 22 x 42cm
Mounting: Raised-float mounted using acid-free Japanese wheat-starch paste and Japanese paper
Framing: Museum-grade maple frame with contrasting spline and 99% UV-resistant glass
Peter László Péri (1899 – 1967) was a Hungarian artist and sculptor renowned for his constructivist artworks in the 1920s. He was involved in the Hungarian avant-garde from an early age, joining Janos Macza’s innovative theatre workshop in 1917. After moving to and being expelled from Paris for sedition, he settled in Berlin, becoming close with a group of exiled left-wing Hungarian avant-garde artists. An émigré to England in 1933 from Nazi-occupied Germany, Péri worked more figuratively after the war.
Two of his sculptural relief works are on display at Tate Britain in the Historic and Modern British Art section 1920-1940, and several of his works are in MoMA. His long-lost Festival of Britain sculpture 'The Sunbathers' was recently restored and installed at Waterloo Station. An exhibition celebrating Péri's work from the period after he emigrated has opened in Berlin at Kunsthaus Dahlem. The collection that we have for sale is largely from this period of his life.

Interiors I: Family Reunion — A penetrating scene with a hidden homage to Eadwea

Interiors I: Family Reunion
1984
Resist ground etching and engraving on BFK Rives wove paper, 20 x 36 inches (501 x 913 mm), full margins. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 49/175 in pencil, lower margin. In excellent condition with minor mat tone. A luminous, rich, and well-inked impression of this haunting image, with astonishing detail and depth. Framed handsomely under museum grade glass with archival materials in a solid wood frame with silver finish. [Milton 107]
Intended to be a stand alone image in its inception, Family Reunion ended up spawning seven additional images, and became a sort of Primo Pensiero in the sprawling, masterpiece suite now known as Interiors. The suite took eight years to complete, and consists of works of varying format, psychological intensity, and subject matter. The thematic darkness in the eight images waxes and wanes, and Milton intentionally included several interlude works to lighten the tension he felt while composing several of the darker images. The first two in the series, Family Reunion, and Hotel Paradise Café, were meant to be companion pieces. The equilibrium of each composition is anchored on a central brooding figure; a man (perhaps based on a Thomas Eakins portrait of the American anthropologist Frank Hamilton...

From a total edirion of 81 plus 5 trial proofs. Printed by Henry E. Carling. Number 18 from the Italian Series. A superb impression of this scarce print, with all of the subtleties and details of the reflections in the water printing clearly. [Fletcher 232]
[Illustrated: Page 192, Arms, Dorothy Noyes, "Hilltowns and Cities of Northern Italy"].
Along with his constant companion and wife, Dorothy Noyes, Arms spent decades exploring and documenting gothic structures throughout Europe. Noyes, an accomplished travel writer, had gifted Arms an etching set...
