Ruth Light Braun was born in Brooklyn NY, and studied art at Cooper Union. After a period during which she did drawings for the New Yorker and book illustrations, she studied for two years with Winold Reiss. She adopted the methods which Reiss used to portray ethnic subjects to doing portraits of Jews in New York. She also did genre scenes of Jewish life in the city during the 1920s and 1930s, and it is likely that this scene of women cleaning in what may be an office building, is one of these. Later she spent time in Palestine, but returned to the U.S. after the death of her first husband. She remarried, and she and her husband formed a catering business in Washington DC. In later life she resumed her art career in Florida.

Ruth Light Braun
Painter Ruth Light Braun was born into a Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York, USA in 1906. After graduating from high school with honor's in art, she enrolled at the Cooper Union Art College for Women in New York, where she took classes in painting and costume design. She worked as a freelance illustrator and her work was published in several books and magazines including the New Yorker. She also studied with the German-born painter Winhold Reiss, who had established his own school of art in New York in 1916, inspired by his portraits of American ethnic communities, which she afterwards made the major focus of her own work. She frequently drew her subjects against backdrops that reflected their daily lives including subway stations, department stores and the Lower East Side neighborhood's that were home to many Jewish immigrants.

Untitled
By Edmund Daniel Kinzinger
Located in Dallas, TX
Edmund D. Kinzinger was the Chairman of the Art Department at Baylor University from 1935 to 1950. Previously, Kinzinger was the Director of the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts in Munich. Kinzinger left Germany in 1933 because he did not agree with the Nazi government. Kinzinger’s early work in Germany was influenced by Theosophy: a philosophy based on mystical insight into the nature of God. This guided Kinzinger’s art away from representation and towards abstraction. Later, Kinzinger assimilated German Expressionism, French Cubism, and Italian Futurism with his own continuing sense of the mystery of life. While his work incorporated the formal qualities of cubism, there was always a mystical moodiness just below the surface.
