About the Item

From emerging Indian artist Sonal Varshneya Ojha are the last available works from her Limited Edition of 7 series Kissa Goi. Art 1821 is selling the last 14, different works, of the artists etchings, from her acclaimed series Kissa Goi on 1stDibs. The artworks can be purchased individually or in sets. Kissa Goi Etching on archival paper Edition 7 of 7 Sheet size 17" x 14", image size 13" x 10" 2019 Signed, editioned, dated and titled in pencil Provenance: From the artist's studio A certificate of Authenticity from the Art 1821 Gallery comes with the artwork. Sonal is a storyteller. Her primary medium of choice is printmaking, exquisite etchings whose protagonists jump off the page to tell their stories. Like all good narratives that lucidly roll from one tale to the other the artist works in series. Be it her Kissa Goi or Emoticons series, each work comprises of many parts, all fitting together as one large work, or, equally as pleasing, as individual works that speak to each other in any combination of pattern. The artist explains that in the evenings the women gather on the roof terraces of her town to tell the tales that are passed down. These are stories that primarily revolve around the woman and their everyday role in a patriarchal society. These tales become mixed with the contemporary, both local and global events that effect the lives of the women. At first glance there is an anecdotal quality to the visual narratives but look a little longer and you will be rewarded by layer upon layer of meaning. Through the clever use of text and images of objects which may at first appear to be dislocated, each part of the image pulls together the narrative, expanding it into many different levels. In Sonal's own words, 'I live in Lucknow, that is my studio. There is a very old tradition in Lucknow, which we are kissa goi, in which everyone shares their stories, the stories of which we are happy to remember, they are very beautiful forgetful tales. There are many stories that are related to me and can be related to you, which are all of us, my work title is kissa goi, in this I have prepared a panel of works.' In this particular work Sonal tells the tale, 'We are all afraid of injections. But then we do not know that a strength comes in us and we are ready because we have to recover quickly. Recently something similar happened with Harish (husband) that's why I have made a lady figure, I have shown an injection in one hand and flowers in one hand, the injection is giving pain, but the flowers are ending the pain, I have made a fan, who is giving relief. When we are sick, we remember God the most, so we have made Shiva.' For more information please see the artist Biography or contact the Gallery.

Sonal lives and works in Lucknow, in India, the City famous for its tradition of Ghazal poetry. In past times the poems were displayed in Diwan's (illustrated books) a calligrapher and artist would be commissioned to illustrate the poems. Sonal references these traditions and we can see traces of this in her contemporary images. Ghazal's delight and employ elements of playfulness, anecdote and surprise. They take their audience on a bitter-sweet journey and Sonal invites us to do the same. In Sonal's own words, This work is very close to my heart, a lot of emotions are attached to this work. Some such feelings that awakened for the first time and they were priceless. I have lived that time, felt it very closely, whatever happened to me at that time, I have tried my best to make it work. The Recluse, Watercolor, Acrylic on paper, Brown, Contemporary Artist "In Stock"
By Joydip Sengupta
Located in Kolkata, West Bengal
Joydip Sengupta - The Recluse - 22 x 17.5 inches (unframed size) Watercolor and Acrylic on paper. Style : His artistic devices are drawn from a range of sources, such as Kalighat paintings and ancient philosophical texts. Of course, his concerns are very much contemporary like the impact of globalization leading to economic marginalization and cultural degradation. His photo realistic works draw from images related to contemporary Indian life, building complex puzzles and weaving together myriad experiences and influences as imbibed by the artist. The motifs in his paintings are rather complex. According to his “I primarily work on Paper and Canvas. My chosen mediums of expression are Watercolour, Gouache, Acrylic and Oil paints. I am also engaged in photography, filmmaking, sculpture and installations.” Conceptually, the immediacy of the drawn image alongside elaboration of the painted surface; balance the overall process of image making with anecdotes and mystery motifs. The interlocking of juxtaposed drawings with the painted surface steadily blurs the certainty of the known from the unknown. An altered sense of reality emerges. The human psyche perceives to the extent of what it may see and beyond that spectrum is the unknown, which is an anxious state of being. The notion of the self within a contained form is bound by the limits of time and to embrace its fleeting nature is a challenge. We are able to justify the presence of reality by assigning identities to it and a strong sense of the self is built around them. From within the illusions of a complex network, we are often reminded that life is fleeting. The surplus and grandeur of modern culture shifts your attention to make-believe realities where the nature of the self is packaged in everlasting youthfulness and happy living. About the Artist & his works : Born : 1973 in New Delhi. Education : 2001 : Completed MFA from the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Scotland, UK. 2000 : MFA from the College of Art, New Delhi, India 1998 : BFA from the Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan, West Bengal, India.
