Moses Parts the Red Sea & Receives the Ten Commandments - Leaflet from the 1497 'Pirate' Nuremberg Chronicles The Nuremberg Chronicles were first published in 1493 by Anton Koberger. Following the success of the initial editions, Johann Schönsperger, an Augsburg based printer, produced pirated editions of the Nuremberg Chronicles, starting with the first Latin edition in 1497. These 'pirate' editions featured re-designed woodcut prints of the original imagery possibly sketched by a young student Albrecht Dürer. Image 16"H x 10"W Due to the success and prestige of the Nuremberg Chronicle, which had one of the largest print-runs of an edition during the incunabula (also known as the incunable period of book production c. 1455–1500), one of the first large-scale pirated editions of the Chronicle appeared on the market. The culprit was Johann Schönsperger (c. 1455–1521), a printer working out of Augsburg who produced smaller editions of the Chronicle in 1496, 1497, and 1500 in German, Latin, and a second edition also in German. It was the beginning of unauthorized book editions, pirated editions which capitalized on the success of another author and printer/publisher without consent.[13] Despite the pirating of a successful book, Schönsperger went bankrupt in 1507. Albrecht Dürer was an apprentice with Wolgemut from 1486 to 1489, so may well have participated in designing some of the illustrations for the specialist craftsmen (called "formschneiders") who cut the blocks, onto which the design had been drawn, or a drawing glued. From 1490 to 1494 Dürer was travelling. A drawing by Wolgemut for the elaborate frontispiece, dated 1490, is in the British Museum. While some art experts may claim to be able to identify which Nuremberg Chronicle woodcuts may be attributed to Dürer, there is no consensus. Dürer was not yet using his monogram, and no artists in Wolgemut's studio signed their work in the Chronicle.

"Alter Ego" - Original Watercolor Hand-Painted Etching on Paper - 35/120 Edition Variable In this highly detailed hand painted etching, artist Claus Sievert (American, 1949-2009) depicts a clown gazing into a handheld brass mirror holding a mask with matching face paint. The clown sits in what appears to be a dressing room surrounded with various costumes. This etching is uniquely hand painted in watercolor and gouache. The clown's eyes are hand drawn with added details throughout the face and hair. Signed, numbered, and titled along the bottom edge of paper, "35/120 E.V. "Alter Ego" Claus Sievert" Presented in a new white mat with foam core backing. Mat size: 24"H x 20"W Paper size: 18.38"H x 15"W Image, Claus Sievert, (American, 1949–2009) nicknamed “The Tree Guy," was a German-born American printmaker and illustrator, who studied etching in an art college in Brunswick, Germany, in 1971. He began his career as an art teacher in Germany, teaching printmaking, art history, advertising design, and visual communication, and became a full-time artist in 1981. Sievert created limited-edition etchings from copper plates and a hand-turned press which he then individually hand-colored. Sievert’s work won awards, illustrated a children’s book by Leo Tolstoy, was commissioned by the Sierra Club and Golden Gate National Recreation Area to illustrate their publications, and he had his images published in several calendars.
