About the Item

BRADLEY, WILL (1868 - 1962) The Chap Book Original lithograph from “Les Maitres de L’Affiche” series Printed by Imprimerie Chaix, Paris Bearing MDL stamp lower right, from issue #34, 1898. Plate #136 Unframed Size: 11 3/8 x 15 3/4” The “Les Maitres de l’Affiche” series was offered as a subscription series to collectors every month for 60 months, from December 1895 through November 1900. The “Maitres de l’Affiche,” were issued as separate numbered sheets, referred to as “plates”. They were numbered, with the printers name “Imprimerie Chaix,” in the margin at the bottom left hand corner, “PL.1” to “PL.240.” In the margin at the bottom right hand corner of each, is a blind embossed stamp from a design of Cheret’s. The smaller format and the fact the “Maitres” were a paid subscription series, allowed Imprimerie Chaix to use the latest state of the art printing techniques, not normally used in the large format posters due to cost. A very high quality of paper was used, where as the large format posters were printed on lesser quality newsprint, due to cost and a short expected life span. This explains why the quality of the printing, in the “Maitres de l’Affiche,” usually far exceeds that of their larger counterparts. “In 1894 two Harvard students, Stone and Kimball, came up with an idea for a magazine called ‘The Chap Book’ that would cover literary and artistic news not normally covered in major journals, including the notion of regarding posters as an art form. Although not meant to be more than college high-jinks, the tiny curiosity surprised the two by prospering and became enough of a hit that when they returned to their native Chicago, they continued to publish it there for some years. Bradley contributed to the success of the original issues of The Chap Book with store counter placards such as this one and created a total of five designs for the publication. This is the only black and white. The influence of Art Nouveau, is clearly apparent, and tender, romantic image piques our interest in the ‘curious and interesting songs, ballads, tales histories etc.’ promised in the text below” (Gold p.75)

Between their first joint attempt at poster-making in 1885-1886 and Duyck's death in 1897, the duo produced a large corpus of works... as well as set designs and costumes for the theatre " (Brussels p.76) This is a Belgian poster for the Ferme de Frahinfaz, on the Hippodrome des Art road near Spa. Original early 20th Century German signed lithograph by Marcus Behmer
By Marcus Behmer
Located in Petworth, West Sussex
Marcus Behmer (German, 1879 – 1958) Die Geravbte orchidee (The robbed orchid), 1903 Signed ‘Marcus Behmer’ (lower right in pencil) Lithograph on paper 16.1/8 x 12in. (40.8 x 30.5cm.) It is apparent Behmer is influenced by the work of Aubrey Beardsley, though this work is no less beautiful in its execution. Little is known regarding his connections to Oscar Wilde though he is obviously an admirer and has many similarities with his private life and incarceration in prison. These works were a personal gift to Baron Detlev von Hadeln, the aristocrat and prominent art historian of the age. Behmer is known to be, since 1903, a member in the first ever homosexual organization in Berlin and was thus probably a part of Adolf Brand’s circle, and may have contributed to Brand’s publication Der Eigene. Until now, few know that Behmer was sentenced in April 1937 by a court in Konstanz to imprisonment for two years, being arrested in Freiburg and at other locations in southern Germany for being a homosexual. At times he was given the opportunity to work as an artist in prison. The works produced in this period are mostly calligraphic designed tablets with Greek text (prayers and Bible quotes...
