Gail Norfleet
Lunch in the Studio

2012

About the Item

Dallas artist Gail Norfleet is best known for her color monotypes, paintings, collages, and paintings on glass. Norfleet earned her BFA at The University of Texas, Austin, and her MFA at Southern Methodist University. Among others, she has had solo exhibitions in Dallas at The McKinney Avenue Contemporary and the former Delahunty and DW Galleries. Gail’s studio and the studios where she teaches serve as the settings for her recent body of work titled "The Studio." The studio is a rich visual environment that has inspired artists for centuries. Gail’s studio is strung with brightly colored Mexican papel picado framing the French windows to a dense canopy of trees. Easels, jars of colored pencils, paintbrushes, fresh flowers, works in progress and painted wicker chairs form colorful patterns with creative flair. In mirror image compositions, we see the influence of many years of making monotypes, in which the image is printed in reverse from the image on the plate. Norfleet furthered this concept of duality of opposites in the symmetrical diptych format of her recent monotypes and paintings. The layering of looking through spaces combined with her intuitive sense of color and vast knowledge of art history informs her compositions. This is a color monotype on BFK Rives France paper. Paper size is 24 x 28 5/8 inches. Frame size is 27 x 31 1/4 inches.
