Basquiat Navarra Catalog Paris (Brother Sausage)

1989

About the Item

Jean Michel Basquiat, Paintings, Sculptures, Works on Paper and Drawings: A rare, well constructed and attractive color illustrated catalog co-published by Galerie Navarra, Paris, Lang & O'Hara Gallery, New York in 1989 to coincide with both gallery shows. Paperback. First edition. Wide paperbound quarto. 108 pp. Text in French and English. 11 3/8 x 9 7/8 / 29 x 25 cm. Minor surface bend in rear (visible from upfront only); in otherwise good to very good overall vintage condition. Texts by Demostènes Davvetas "J.-M. Basquiat - Chapters, lines and verses", by Annina Nosei, Alain Bonfand and Pierre Cornette de Saint Cyr. "Featured on the cover of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Brother Sausage - one of the artist’s epic masterpieces. Presented like a cartoon strip, the painting is composed of six panels hinged together to form a narrative frieze of multiple drawings and Xeroxed overlays, laden with themes of racial inequality and prejudice, wealth and corporate greed in a frenetic fame-and consumer-obsessed Americana. The work is steeped in Basquiat’s signature ingenious poetic expressiveness, raw energy, and loaded layering. Brother Sausage exemplifies Basquiat at the pinnacle of his career." (source: Christie's)
