About the Item

Extremely rare early work by “The Father of the Poster,” Jules Chéret: Lithograph announcing Charles Dickens’s David Copperfield, printed on Imperial Japon by Imprimerie Chaix (Ateliers Chéret), Paris in 1886. The use of marbled Imperial Japon paper allows inks to rest upon its surface rather than being absorbed by a more permeable paper stock. An extremely scarce fraction of the edition of 25 are estimated to have survived to date. This artwork is presented in an archival rag mat and arrives accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Charles Dickens was the most popular novelist of his time and remains one of the best-known and most read of English authors. His works have never gone out of print and have been adapted continuously for the screen since the invention of Cinema. He was the creator of some of the world's most memorable characters; of course, David Copperfield is one of the most famous. Originally published in serialized form, this poster announces an early collected edition of the novel from Dickens’s French publisher, Hachette & Cie. In the preface to the 1867 UK Edition, Dickens wrote, “like many fond parents, I have in my heart of hearts a favorite child. And his name is David Copperfield.” Exhibitions (example): La Belle Époque de Jules Chéret: de l’Affiche au décor: Les Arts Décoratifs, Paris; Museum Villa Stuck, Munich; Musée Toulouse-Lautrec, Albi.
