About the Item

This exquisite lithograph by Andre Derain (1880–1954), titled Le Diner (The Dinner), from Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. II, No. 8, originates from the 1940 issue published by Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, under the direction of Teriade, Editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1940. This elegant composition exemplifies Derain’s mature style, merging classical order with the emotional vibrancy that defined his early Fauvist years. Le Diner captures the warmth and intimacy of shared human experience, rendered with the artist’s refined sense of color harmony and compositional rhythm. The work embodies Derain’s continual dialogue between modern innovation and timeless beauty, reflecting his pursuit of balance between light, structure, and expression. Executed as a lithograph on velin du Marais paper, this work measures 14 x 10.5 inches (35.56 x 26.67 cm). Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of the Mourlot Freres atelier, renowned for its collaborations with leading modernists of the 20th century. Conceived as a synthesis of art and literature, Verve brought together the greatest modern artists and writers of its time—Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Georges Braque, Joan Miro, Fernand Leger, and others—alongside poets and philosophers such as Paul Eluard, Albert Camus, and Jean-Paul Sartre. Each issue was a work of art in itself, luxuriously printed by master ateliers such as Mourlot Freres and produced in collaboration with leading typographers and designers. Verve became a platform for avant-garde creativity, publishing original lithographs and essays that reflected the evolving spirit of modernism. Matisse collaborated closely with Teriade from the magazine’s inception, producing some of its most iconic issues, including those devoted to his paper cut-outs. The wartime issues of Verve, such as the 1940 volume featuring works by Derain, exemplified the publication’s resilience and its commitment to artistic excellence even amid global upheaval. About the Artist: Andre Derain (1880–1954) was a French painter, printmaker, sculptor, and one of the founding fathers of Fauvism whose radical use of pure color and simplified form redefined modern art in the early 20th century. Born in Chatou, near Paris, Derain initially studied engineering before turning to painting, where his collaboration with Henri Matisse and Maurice de Vlaminck ignited a revolution in color and expression. His early landscapes of Collioure and London burst with vibrancy and emotional energy, marking a decisive break from Impressionism and establishing him as a leading innovator of the avant-garde. Drawing inspiration from Paul Cezanne’s structure, Paul Gauguin’s color harmonies, and the optical theories of Georges Seurat, Derain developed a style that balanced intensity and order, bridging Fauvism and the emerging currents of Cubism. Throughout his career, he moved among the great creative minds of modernism, including Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, sharing with them a commitment to experimentation and form. Derain’s later work evolved toward classical composition and sculptural clarity, influencing generations of artists who sought to reconcile tradition with modern innovation—from early abstractionists to postwar colorists and Neo-Expressionists. Today, his paintings remain cornerstones of museum and private collections worldwide for their brilliance, historical significance, and enduring beauty. The artist’s highest auction record was achieved by Arbres a Collioure (1905), which sold for £16,281,250 (approximately $24 million) at Sotheby’s, London, on June 22, 2010.
