David Rosenthal (1876-1949) was a Cincinnati artist who was known as an American Impressionist. He studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati with Frank Duveneck, Lewis Meakin, and Joseph Henry Sharp. After finishing, Rosenthal traveled to Munich to study with G. Flad and Azbe and exhibited at the Kuenstler Verein. He won a scholarship at the Belle Arts in Rome, became a member of the Cirelo Internationale, and continued his studies at the Academy of Milan in Florence. During his extended residence in Europe, Rosenthal moved from Munich to Rome. Upon returning home during the early 1900s to the 1920s, Rosenthal came into demand as a portrait painter. An article in 1905 Cincinnati newspaper shows a photograph of him painting in his studio, featuring his popularity with the elite of Cincinnati and Chicago. He continued exhibiting and selling his work, including a portrait of Ohio Governor Salmon P. Chase for the State Capital in Columbus. There are also several series of portrait etchings of prominent composers, presidents, and people distinguished in other fields. Rosenthal's etching of Franklin Roosevelt is found in the White House Collection. Other work can be found in the Chicago Institute of Art, the New York Public Library, among others. After this period, he concentrated primarily on etchings, mezzotints and aquatints and in 1939 he shared a studio with Max Pollak who was an etcher and printer of other artists in Cincinnati.

Verdes, Loir et Cher, France
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "Verdes, Loire et Cher, France" is an original lithograph by American artist Teall (La Verne Teall) Messer, 1897-1977. It is hand signed, titled, dated and numbered 36/40 in pencil by the artist. The image size is 10.65 x 13.65 inches, the sheet size is 14 x 21.5 inches. It is in excellent condition, especially considering the age of this piece. About the artist: Born in Dixon Illinois in 1897, Teall Messer dropped the name Lavern as soon as he came "of age". He went to New York to be an artist and intellectual. He hung out with the playwrights of the time and ended up with an award from the Rockefellers to go to Paris and study painting. This was in the 1920's. He stayed for several years in Paris being the stereotypical American painter there. He had contact with at least some of the famous painters and shared a studio with Alexander Calder. One story was that he and Alexander were dating two French sisters. The girls' mother told them to drop the Americans as they would never make much money. That was true for Teall, not so for Calder. He also knew Brancusi well enough to have a signed sketch dedicated "á Teall Messer avec amour". He knew Gertrude Stein well enough to heartily dislike her, considering her a phony. In France Teall married a member of the Byrd...

Village by a Road
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "Village by a Road" c 1940 is a watercolor on paper by noted artist Donald Jeffries Bear 1905-1952. It is signed in pencil at the lower right corner by the artist. The artwork size is 10.65 x 14.5 inches, framed size is 17 x 21 inches. Framed in original frame. The artwork is in good condition, paper is toned by time, the four extreme corners are slightly discolored by hanging tape. Donald Jeffries Bear, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art's founding director from 1940 to 1952, was born on this day, February 5, 1905, in Terre Haute, Indiana. He previously served as the Director of the Denver Art Museum (1935-1940), regional advisor for the Federal Art Project (1935-38), and as principal of the World's Fair in New York (1938-39). While director of the SBMA, Bear served as president of the Western Association of Art Directors from 1943 to 1946. He was also an art critic and, last but not least, an artist. Bear was well travelled, spoke numerous foreign languages, and as a Renaissance man, he was a singular match for another local polymath, Wright S. Ludington. In addition to his duties as director, Bear was also the curator and was responsible for producing over 600 exhibitions during his tenure. The exhibitions were as remarkable for their quality as well as their quantity, including SBMA's inaugural exhibition, Painting Today and Yesterday in the United States (June 5―September 1, 1941), which featured pieces from George Bellows, Mary Cassatt, Robert Harnett, Childe Hassam, Robert Henri, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Georgia O'Keefe, and numerous others. Perhaps most remarkably, the SBMA displayed two of the most influential paintings of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso’s Guernica (1937) and Marcel Duchamp’s revolutionary Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 (1912) as part of the “Free France” exhibition in 1942. He was also responsible for producing numerous solo artist exhibitions, many of which were the first of their careers, including: William Dole, Clarence Hinkle...
