About the Item

Edward William Cooke was born in Pentonville. His father, George Cooke, and uncle William Bernard Cooke were also well-known line engravers. Growing up in an environment of artists, he discovered his love of drawing and the art of engraving at a young age and perfected his passion over the years accordingly. His simultaneous preference for sea motifs (mainly sailing ships) eventually led to the publication of his "Shipping and Crafts", a series of completed copperplate engravings, at the age of 18. In 1858 he was elected to the National Academy of Design as an honorary academician.
