English printmaker, graphic designer, illustrator and painter. He studied at the School of Art in Cambridge (1918-22) and at the Design School of the Royal College of Art (1922-6), where he was a contemporary of Eric Ravilious and was taught by Paul Nash. While still a student he and Ravilious were commissioned by Sir Joseph Duveen to paint a mural at Morley College, London. After graduating he worked on a large variety of projects for the Curwen Press at Plaistow, London, and subsequently for many other publishers, producing book illustrations and cover designs, posters and advertisements, leaflets and calendars, including commissions for Shell-Mex, Westminster Bank and the London Transport Board. He held his first one-man show, mainly of landscapes showing the influence of Nash, at the Zwemmer Gallery in London in 1933. During World War II he served as an Official War Artist in the British Army, travelling to Belgium, France and the Middle East and portraying such places as Roman Catholic Church at Addis Ababa. His later work, particularly as a graphic designer, is notable for its simplicity of line and its wit, but he also returned to large-scale mural painting. He also became well-known for his linocuts.

Graham Sutherland was a painter of imaginative landscapes, still life, figure pieces and portraits.
He was born on 24 August 1903 in London. He abandoned a railway engineering apprenticeship after a year and studied at Goldsmiths' College School of Art, where he specialized in engraving and etching. Sutherland's formative influences on his early work were Blake, Samuel Palmer, the late Turner, Paul Nash and Henry Moore. He held his first and second exhibitions of drawings and engravings at the XXI Gallery, London, in 1925 and 1928. and was a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers from 1926-33.
Sutherland taught engraving at the Chelsea School of Art from December 1926 and composition and book illustration 1935 to July 1940. He exhibited at the N.E.A.C. 1929-33 and with the London Group from 1932 (member 1936-7), experimenting with painting in oils from 1930 until, in 1935, the year after his first visit to Pembrokeshire, he decided to become a painter. He participated in the International Surrealist Exhibition in London 1936 and had his first one-man exhibition of oil paintings, mainly Welsh landscapes, at the Paul Rosenberg and Helft Gallery 1938.
As an Official War Artist 1941-4 he painted scenes of bomb devastation and of work in mines and foundries. Sutherland's first New York exhibition was at the Buchholz Gallery 1946, and in the same year he completed the 'Crucifixion' for St Matthew's Church, Northampton. He taught painting at Goldsmiths' College as a visiting instructor and since 1947 worked for several months each year on the French Riviera. He was a trustee of the Tate Gallery 1948-54. Painted the portrait of Somerset Maugham 1949, the first of a series which includes Lord Beaverbrook, Sir Winston Churchill and others. He completed the designs for the Coventry Cathedral tapestry, 'Christ in Glory in the Tetramorph', between 1954 and 1957 (installed 1962). Has also designed posters, ceramics, book illustrations, and ballet costumes and décor for The Wanderer 1940. Important retrospective exhibitions have been held at the I.C.A. 1951, the Venice Biennale and the Musée National d'Art Moderne, Paris, 1952, the Tate Gallery 1953, and at the São Paulo Bienal, Brazil, 1955. Edward Bawden was a watercolourist, illustrator, designer, printmaker and teacher, born in Braintree, Essex, the county in which he spent much of his life, finally living in Saffron Walden. Studied at Cambridge School of Art from 1919, then at Royal College of Art, 1922-5, on a scholarship, in the design school being taught by Paul Nash. Soon began on commercial work for Poole Pottery and Curwen Press, then in 1928-9 with Eric Ravilious and Charles Mahoney did decorations for Morley College. Bawden went on studying engraving and bookbinding at Central School Arts and Crafts after leaving the Royal College and himself taught there, the Royal Academy Schools and Goldsmiths' College School of Art. First one-man show at Zwemmer Gallery in 1934, after which he showed extensively including RA, being elected RA in 1956. Work poured from Bawden's studio in the 1930s, for companies such as Shell-Mex; book illustrations such as Good Food, 1932, and The Week-end Book, 1939; and a mass of often ephemeral work which evinced a wonderful wit, economy and aptness to subject. Official War Artist in World War II, much of his output being in the Imperial War Museum. Tate Gallery and many other public collections hold his work. Bawden did decorations for the SS Orcades and Oronsay and for the Unicorn Pavilion for the Festival of Britain of 1951. His son was the artist Richard Bawden...
