EUGÈNE CORNEAU (1894-1976) Corneau was born on the 18th June 1894 in Vouzeron, but with his family hadmoved to Paris by 1901. His exhibiting career began in earnest in 1918, and he became a regular exhibitor at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Tuileries. In the mid 1920’s he began a period of extended travel acrossNorth Africa including stays in Algeria. He held a great many soloexhibitions in France throughout his long career, and in 1937 he was given the honour of decorating the Pavillon du Berry-Nivernais at the Exposition Universelle.
His exhibiting career was not limited the France however, indeed he had notable shows in Brussels, Alger, New York (in 1928 and 1938) and Tunis. He also presented work at the 1940 Venice Biennale. A full retrospective of his work was held at Saint-Jean de-Monts in 1975. Between1953 and 1962 he produced engravings for the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts d’Alger. He is perhaps best known for his landscape painting, particularly street scenes and the coasts of Brittany and Provence. He also painted the ports of France’s Atlantic coast. He painted a number of interior scenes that show a considerable debt to the Intimiste school of French painting. He was a long-standing friend of Marquet and was known to hold the work of the Nabis in high regard. Corneau died in Pontaubert in 1976.

EDMOND CÉRIA (1879-1954) From his childhood, Edmond Ceria showed a predisposition for music, drawing and painting. After studying at the Évian college, he entered the Geneva School of Fine Arts. Disappointed by teaching, he went to Paris in 1904, entered the Académie Julian and attended the Louvre museum where he discovered the work of Paul Cézanne which shocked him. He becomes a disciple of this new vision of the world, where sensitivity and love of nature replace genre and anecdote. According to René Barotte, “its incisive pages are reminiscent of Guardi or Canaletto. His style gradually frees itself from a certain rigor in execution. The touch becomes a sign, almost an ideogram, and the small painting appears written like a love poem. He began his career by exhibiting at the Salon des Indépendants in 1908, then at the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon d'Automne of which he was a member. In 1919, he spent a year in Tuscany which made him aware, like Corot, of the importance of light in painting. During this stay, he copied the great Italian masters including Giotto, Uccello, Masaccio. Back in France, Ceria discovered the light of Provence, painting mainly in Marseille and Sanary. In Paris, he set up in a workshop near the Observatory and frequently went down to the quays to paint the Seine, the bridges, the Concorde, the Tuileries and the Luxembourg. In 1934, he stopped his travels in Provence to discover Brittany where he spent many years. Indifferent to fashions and unfailingly attached to the nature that he stylizes, he pursues a landscape work whose light touches highlight the accidents or reflections. When the climate forced him to paint in the studio, he devoted his talent to still lifes, which testify to his love of life, just as his landscapes reflect his taste for nature. Ceria participated, with his friends Charles Dufresne, Othon Friesz and Henry de Waroquier, in the first exhibition of the Masters of Independent Art at the Petit Palais in 1937. Always alongside Dufresne, to whom he entrusted the artistic education of his son Jacques Despierre, he decorated the small foyer of the Chaillot theater with Le Théâtre...

The Pavilion de Mademoiselle and Part of the Louvre
By Charles Meryon
Located in Middletown, NY
A fine and early state impression from an almost unparralled 19th century Parisian collection curated by Loys Delteil.
Etching, drypoint, and roulette on buff laid Japon paper, 5 7/16 x 9 13/16 inches (137 × 249 mm) full margins. In very good condition with light and unobtrusive scattered foxing. Some pencil inscriptions in the margins, recto, as well as the Alfred Beurdeley collection stamp (Lugt 421) in black ink in the lower left margin on the recto. There are some light scattered inscriptions in pencil on the verso, as well as a numerical stamp in blue ink, which we believe is the lot number from part III of a well-known series of sales of Beurdeley's collection organized by Loys Delteil. This portion of the sale of Beurdeley's massive collection focused on Modern Prints, and took place on May 19 – 20, 1920, in Paris. In regard to the content of the sale, Fritz Lugt states "Meryon's work included all the beautiful pieces about Paris." A rich and tonal impression.
[Delteil & Wright 9; Schneiderman 12].
A note on the provenance:
Alfred Beurdeley (1847-1919) was the son of one of the first antique dealers in Paris...
