Sepolcro de’ tre fratelli Curazj in Albano (Tomb of the three brothers Curazj in Albano) is a wonderful etching on thick laid paper with watermark (a lily in a double circle, watermark n. 2 described by Hind), realized by Giovan Battista Piranesi.
From the series “Le Antichità Romane, Tomo III” (Roman Antiquities, Tome III), this old master's artwork is titled at the bottom center, signed on plate on the lower right margin "Gio. Batta Piranesi Architetto diseg. e incise", and has a long caption on plate on the lower margin: "Esso è erroneamente così detto, mentre abbiamo degli antichi Scrittori essere stato presso la Fossa Clelia cinque miglia lontan da Roma, ove i Curazj furono uccisi dagli Orazj." (It is erroneously called so, while we have ancient writers having been near the Fossa Clelia five miles away from Rome, where the Curazis were killed by the Orazj."). Numbered in Roman numerals "X" on the higher right margin.
With a very fresh impression and a wide palette of grays with deep vibrant blacks, this plate, representing the funeral monument of the three Curazj brothers, is in excellent conditions, except for a usual medial fold and a light abrasion on the lower margin at the center. This defect does not affect the image, so that we have the opportunity to admire the masterful draftsmanship of Piranesi.
Le Antichità Romane, Tomo III
The first edition of this series published by Bouchard and Gravier in Rome in 1756 is made up of four volumes and has the original title in Italian: "The Antiquities of Rome by Giambattista Piranesi, Venetian Architect, divided in four volumes.." as the catalog by Ficacci attests.
Our etching is from the third volume "contenente gli avanzi de' monumenti sepolcrali di Roma e dell'agro romano" (containing the remains of the sepulchral monuments of Rome and the Roman countryside") as the title reports. This tome is consists in 51 plates, including two title pages; 4 plates that, albeit unnumbered, occupy the spaces of numbers XXIII, XXIV, XXV, XXVI, engraved by Girolamo Rossi after a drawing by Antonio Buonamici; plates XXVII, XLVI, XLVIII bear, in different editions, the certification of authorship: "Barbault scolpì le figure". The 1784 edition instead contains 54 plates.
Hind classified this plate with the number XXVI, though in the later edition published between 1778 and 1792.

Giovanni Battista Piranesi
Piranesi was born in Venice in 1720 and died in Rome in 1778. He was the son of a stone mason and was trained as an architect. After a slow start he eventually achieved great success as an architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer. His mission was to glorify the architecture of ancient Rome through his engravings and etchings. His highly dramatized prints often depict imaginary interiors and frequently include figures in mysterious activities, who are dwarfed by the magnitude of their monumental surroundings. Piranesi's style greatly influenced the neoclassical art movement of the late 18th century. His dramatic scenes inspired generations of set designers, as well as artists, architects and writers. His prints have continued to increase in value to institutions and collectors.
