Background:
In 1740 Giovanni Battista Piranesi arrived in Rome for the first time and he was astonished by the Eternal City’s beauty. He served an apprenticeship before with the Valeriani’s workshop, and after with Giuseppe Vasi’s one. The Sicilian engraver and vedutist teached him the etching technique, conveying his graphic art’s passion to the Venetian old master.

Giovanni Battista Piranesi
Piranesi was born in Venice in 1720 and died in Rome in 1778. He was the son of a stone mason and was trained as an architect. After a slow start he eventually achieved great success as an architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer. His mission was to glorify the architecture of ancient Rome through his engravings and etchings. His highly dramatized prints often depict imaginary interiors and frequently include figures in mysterious activities, who are dwarfed by the magnitude of their monumental surroundings. Piranesi's style greatly influenced the neoclassical art movement of the late 18th century. His dramatic scenes inspired generations of set designers, as well as artists, architects and writers. His prints have continued to increase in value to institutions and collectors.

Thomas Goff Lupton was a mezzotint engraver and miniature painter who was the first artist to use soft steel plates in the art of engraving. He experimented with plates of nickel, steel and other metals before producing a satisfactory steel plate. It was well received, and from 1823, steel engravings superseded copper engravings. This development permitted a printing of up to 1,500 mezzotints of excellent quality. The copper plates formerly used were very soft and could produce only around fifty prints of similar quality. Lupton's works include copies of landscape series by J.M.W. Turner as well as engraved portraits after oil...
