About the Item

White Flowers on Pink Sky - Limited Edition Naive Serigraph Colorful serigraph by Croatian naive artist Ivan Rabuzin (b. 27 March 1921, d. 18 December 2008.) A giant white flower rises above the hills and clouds in the center of this idealized landscape. A line of pale blue-grey clouds crosses behind the flower, cradling it in the pink sky. The petals of the flower and the bottom of the clouds are highlighted by a metallic ink. This metallic ink is also present in a stream of dots running across the top of the sky. Below the flower are five foliage-covered hills depicted in various shapes of green, pinks, pale yellows, and oranges. In front of the hills is a line of white flowers similar to the one in the sky. These flowers then give way to rows of golden wheat stalks. This piece is an excellent example of the highly-patterned idealizations which Rabuzin was known for. Hand numbered and signed by artist along the bottom "83/150 Ivan Rabuzin" Mat size: 31" H x 39" W Paper size: 27.75" H x 36.32" W Image size: 25" H x 33" W Ivan Rabuzin was born in the small village of Kljuc, near Novi Marof, Croatia in 1921. He was the sixth of eleven children and his father worked as a miner. As an adult, Rabuzin moved to Zagreb where he studied carpentry, then returned to Novi Marof, eventually becoming the foreman at the furniture factory located in the town. He did not begin painting until he was thirty-five years old. His paintings were derived from his childhood landscape and local countryside. He won first prize at the Exhibition of Amateur Painters in Zagreb in 1958 and in 1960, only four years after he began painting, he had his first solo exhibition. Following this he began painting full-time and in 1963 his work was exhibited at the Galerie Mona Lisa in Paris, marking the beginning of his international career. He became known for his geometric and densely patterned works depicting landscapes, vegetation, and clouds. In 1972 he was described as “one of the greatest naïve painters of all times and countries” by the French art critic Anatole Jokovsky. Rabuzin continued to paint until an illness began preventing him in 2002. He passed away on December 18, 2008, in Varaždin, Croatia.
