About the Item

Etching in colors on vélin de Rives paper. Unsigned and unnumbered, as issued. Good condition, with centerfold, as issued. Notes: From the folio, Hésiode, Les Travaux et les jours. Eaux-fortes de Jacques Villon, 1962. Published by les Éditions de la Revue Verve, Paris, under the direction of Tériade, éditeur, Paris; printed by Ateliers Crommelynck, Paris, July 20, 1962. Excerpted from the volume (translated from French), This portfolio, "The works and the days" of Hésiode, according to the translation of E. Bergougnan, is illustrated with nineteen original etchings in black and four original etchings in colors of Jacques Villon. The fifteen double-page etchings, including three in color, as well as the frontispiece in color, were drawn by les Ateliers Crommelynck, the seven single-page etchings in black by Georges Leblanc. All coppers were scratched after print. The Romain De L'université Corps Vingt-Quatre was composed by hand and printed by L'Imprimerie nationale under the guidance of Georges Arnoult. This book was completed to print for les Éditions Verve on July 20, 1962. This portfolio was drawn in one hundred and eighty examples on vélin de Rives, numbered from 1 to 180, and twenty examples reserved for employees numbered from I to XX, all signed by Jacques Villon. It was also drawn sixty suites including all the boards of the portfolio, numbered and signed by the artist. JACQUES VILLON (1875-1963), also known as Gaston Duchamp, was a French Cubist and abstract painter and printmaker. Among Villon's greatest achievements as a printmaker was his creation of a purely graphic language for cubism – an accomplishment that no other printmaker, including his fellow cubists Pablo Picasso or Georges Braque, could claim.
