About the Item

"The Fisherman's Catch" is a signed (in pencil lower right and in plate lower left) etching by James Fagan. It depicts a fisherman walking on a beach in black and white. It is signed JAS Fagan, which was a common way to abbreviate the name James. 15 1/2" x 25 1/4" image 17 1/2" x 26 1/2" plate 28" x 35" frame James Fagan, born in 1864, was an American Etcher that worked in a realistic style. He favored naturalistic scenes of everyday life like people milling about, men working, and families interacting. Fagan was also interested in classical subjects, choosing to depict heroes from Greece and Rome as well as people in robes and classical dress. A well traveled man, he also created scenes from places like Cuba and the Netherlands. Fagan died in 1918.
