About the Item
"End of Day" Original Limited Edition Etching by John McGrath (Irish/American b.1884 d.1942).
This etching depicts a man with a tool slung over his shoulder walking along a path through the fields while a dog runs after him. The piece is titled "End of Day," implying that the man is likely on his way home after working outside all day. Although both the man and the dog appear to be moving, there is a sense of stillness to the piece. The moody sky and bright clouds bring emotional depth to the scene.
Signed "John McGrath" under the impression.
Unnumbered but from a limited run of 300 prints.
John McGrath was born in Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland and moved to Baltimore, Maryland with his family when he was twelve years old. He began his education at the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute where he discovered a love of art while making mechanical drawings. He ultimately dropped out to support his family, working as a businessman until 1928. During this time he attended night classes at the Maryland Institute College of Art. In 1928 he quit his job and went to travel and study in Europe, where he attended the Academies Julian and Colarossi in Paris and the Slade School of Fine Art in London. Upon his return to Baltimore, McGrath joined the Baltimore Charcoal Club and was elected as its president in 1931, he held the position until his death in 1942. He is known now for his etchings of maritime scenes as well as Southern landscapes and city scenes.
