John Taylor Arms
Black and White Etching -- Rodez

1927

About the Item

This detailed etching depicts Notre Dame in France. The foreground shows an alleyway, with cracking and peeling buildings, plants climbing the walls, and a shifting stone road. Each mark and detail is purposeful, giving the viewer an intimate look at these famous landmarks. The artist used sewing needles and magnifying glasses to achieve this level of detail. This piece is sold in wood frame and is signed by the artist in the front. John Taylor Arms is a well-known American etcher whose prints are very collectible. He studied Law at Princeton University, then transferred to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to study architecture. After WWI, he became a full-time etcher and successful graphic artist. The subjects of his etchings were primarily buildings in Italy and France; he also etched American cities.
