About the Item
A perfect summer day. A young mother, little boy, and even smaller girl have their luncheon under a make shift 'fly' -- a stripped cloth canopy fixed up with poles. Although it is titled 'Seaside Nomads,' to me it has the look of a bay or inlet. It's relatively flat and there are all sorts of grasses, old toy boats, traces of horseshoe crabs, and mysterious shells.
It was published by Associated American Artists in an edition of 250 in 1946. (Windisch and Cole 826). It is signed, titled and annotated 'Artist Proof,' in pencil but it is also signed and dated 1945 in the lower left corner of the image. That means it was drawn in the last year of WWII making this idyllic scene even more poingant.
