A beautiful handcolored etching of a morning ride in Upstate New York. Gallery curates a series of original etchings from respected European artist and ex-New Yorker, Cuca Romley. Ms Romley is in her eighties, and currently based in Spain after spending decades in New York City. She was trained at The École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA), a distinguished National School of Fine Arts in Paris, France. The artist won several noted awards for her art in her native Spain, and in Paris, France. She worked as an artist and also had a career in advertising, illustration and interior design, in Spain, France and New York. As an artist, she has had solo and group exhibitions first Paris, France, Monaco, Japan, Spain and the US. ETCHINGS Cuca Romley’s etchings of both famous and little places around the world are depicted with a remarkable attention to detail, a style that belies her sophisticated sense of line and color. These etchings capture a bygone era of a city in flux, and a snap shot of a classic image of a place. Each plate is etched with patience and a thoroughness reminiscence of the earlier days of engraving, in exquisite and fine detail. Romley creates her intricate design on the etching ground that covers the copper plate. After the acid has etched the lines into the copper plate she engraves the details into the plate with a buril until the image is completed. For each individual print a master printer must ink the plate and wipe the surface clean. The plate is placed on the bed of the press and the previously wet French Arches paper 100% cotton covering the plate to pass through the press, and that completes the printing process. After the printing ink has dried for a couple of days, the etching is ready for the hand coloring by the artist. There are often more than 30 colors in one of Romley’s images. Each print can take up to 6 hours to color; these colors impart a subtle transparent effect that compliments the delicacy of the line. Every etching in the limited edition is then signed and numbered in pencil by the artist. On CMF Fabiano paper. Size specified is the size of the copper plate, I.e. the image size. Framed behind glass. - in very good condition - The flowing space of memory - About the artwork On an implied horizon line, a dog-like animal has risen on its hind legs and is about to jump over some kind of hurdle. To the left, a small flag is waving in the wind. The animal and the flag point forward, toward the reader, into the future. The flagpole, however, bends backwards in the opposite direction, corresponding to the impulse of movement of the sign-like formations in the "sky". The title of this work by Mordstein is also revealing. It reads "Memory and Presence" and thematizes the system of signs above the animal as memory. It is therefore not so much a sky as the space of remembering consciousness. Memory moves into the past, but comes from the future and begins where the animal first moves. Here, Mordstein develops a subtle pictorial philosophy about the character of time and the structure of memory, in which the system of signs representing the content of consciousness is inspired by the pictorial language of Paul Klee, whom Mordstein continues to think about in his own way. About the artist After graduating from the Werkkunstschule in Augsburg, Karl Mordstein worked as a commercial artist in Munich before becoming a freelance artist and concentrating entirely on his own creations. In 1970 Mordstein married the sculptor Sinen Thalheimer and the artist couple moved to Starnberg. In 1972, Mordstein had his first solo exhibition in Munich, which marked the beginning of an active international exhibition career that lasted for decades. From 1987 the couple lived on the Hollerberg in Wilzhofen. "It is certainly not wrong to recognize in the impression of his calmly floating color drawings the expression of a state of mind that owes itself precisely to this conscious turning away from the hectic art market: concentrated serenity. Links daneben weht eine kleine Fahne im Wind. Das Tier und die Fahne weisen in Leserichtung nach vorne, in die Zukunft hinein. Die Fahnenstange biegt sich allerdings in die gegenteilige Richtung nach hinten und entspricht damit dem Bewegungsimpuls der zeichenhaften Gebilde am ‚Himmel‘. Auch bei diesem Werk Mordsteins ist der Titel aufschlussreich. Er lautet „Erinnerung u. Gegenwart“ und thematisiert das Zeichensystem über dem Tier als Erinnerung. Daher handelt es sich weniger um einen Himmel als um den Raum des erinnernden Bewusstseins. Die Erinnerung zieht in die Vergangenheit, kommt aber von der Zukunft her und beginnt dort, wohin sich das Tier erst bewegt. Mordstein entwickelt hier eine subtile Bildphilosophie über den Charakter der Zeit und die Struktur der Erinnerung, wobei das für den Bewusstseinsinhalt stehende Zeichensystem von der Bildsprache Plau Klees inspiriert ist, den Mordstein hier auf seine Art...

In very good condition, printed on a very thin (two ply?) Japan paper, with margins, 6 1/8 x 8 3/4, the sheet 8 1/4 x 11, archival mounting. A brilliant, black impression printed with astonishing clarity and exquisite detailing, on an ivory Japan paper. Presumably this is a proof impression before the relatively large edition published in this state (the edition was not on this paper). Provenance: Inscribed “To Otto J. Schneider from his friend Frederick Keppel”. Schneider (1875-1946) was an American artist, noted for his realism, influenced by Whistler. Keppel was of course the well-known American dealer, one of whose specialties was Whistler prints. Keppel had a good relationship with Whistler until, as in most of his relationships, Whistler became inordinately troublesome – at which point Keppel wrote Whistler a longish, mocking poem, with lines such as these: “Like cackling hens or cocks a-crowing Your tireless trumpet keeps a-blowing. ” After this, Keppel wrote “at this point all my intercourse with this extraordinary man came to an end.” (In the lower right is the ghost of another inscription, now erased, apparently to another friend from Edna (?) Schneider who presumably owned this print after Otto Schneider...
