Ed Ruscha Los Angeles Bicentennial: 200 Years Old Rare SIGNED & NUMBERED edition
By Ed Ruscha
Located in New York, NY
Ed Ruscha
200 Years Old, 1980
Offset lithograph
Hand signed and numbered 132/425 by Ed Ruscha in graphite pencil on the front
30 1/2 × 25 inches
Unframed
Bibliography:
ED RUSCHA: AN ARCHIVE OF PROJECTS, 2023, pg 149.
Publisher:
Haddad's Fine Arts, Inc., California, USA
This is a quintessential Los Angeles print - celebrating the 200th anniversary of the City of Angels; a wonderful, classic Ruscha image. It was commissioned by LA200 for the 1981 Los Angeles Bicentennial, and is based upon an original drawing that Ruscha created for the project. Ruscha's lifelong artistic preoccupation has been a thought-experiment on the theme of the decline of American civilization, so naturally Los Angeles would be represented as a sunset (not a sunrise); the image is also perhaps a subtle reference to Sunset Boulevard - a geographical location as well as the title of an iconic Hollywood movie.
This work is pencil signed and numbered from the limited edition of only 425. A must have for any Ruscha fans with a connection to this legendary West Coast city.

Characters from the Sketchbooks (from September Storm plus Self Portrait)
Located in New Orleans, LA
This is a page from the artist's sketchbooks. Six pencil drawings show figures that might have been in preparation for future lithographs, Certainly the woman with the umbrella could have been an early iteration for September Storm. There is also a self portrait of Nesbitt. Clearly the works are authentic if unsigned. Provenance: from the Nesbitt studio.
From workers wrestling with heavy machinery to a lone horseman traveling down a rut-filled country road; from the animated crowd at a livestock auction to the dignified worshippers at a serene Sunday service; Jackson Lee Nesbitt chose to represent the essence of humanity and the nobility of ordinary folk striving to get along as best they can. He studied with Thomas Hart Benton and John Demartelly...

Artist Biography: William Givler was one of the most influential artists and teachers in Oregon. He devoted forty-two years to the Museum Art School, beginning in 1931 as an instructor, interrupted by service as a forester during World War II, and then as dean from 1944 until his retirement in 1973. He established the four-year degree program and secured accreditation for the school. In 1949 Givler inaugurated the first Print Annual at the Portland Art Museum.
In 1953 Givler, Carl Hall, and two Washington artists exhibited in a four-person show at the Seattle Art Museum. He had many one-person shows throughout the United States during his long career: Seattle Art Museum, Portland Art Museum, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, University of Virginia, and others. In 1959 Givler painted an oil, Mt. Hood, for Timberline Lodge...

Documentation of one of the startling and most stunning public art projects, representing the essence of conceptual art on a scale unmatched in the 20th century, one might say. 100 rock climbers abseiling down the facade of the Reichstag, without cranes or machinery being used in the project. This publication provides vivid documentation and a perspective of the extent of the project by the Bulgarian artist. His personal view, as expressed in The Guardian: "Artist - and above all architects - seek permanence," he said. "I don't. I like leaving nothing. That takes courage." His projects were funded mainly by selling preparatory drawings, always refusing sponsorship. Christo forbade the Three Tenors...
